Compact, easily-explored and immensely easy-going. Colombo can be a happy experience for families and yet the first thought of many people is to give Sri Lanka’s capital a skip and head instead of the hills and the beaches.
When it comes to activities in Colombo, you could just enjoy some R&R in the capital’s well-appointed bars and restaurants. The vast majority welcome children of all ages, offering excellent food in relaxed surroundings. Hygiene standards are good in all the reputable places and Colombo can also offer the most varied selection of food around, helping your family settle in to a holiday in Sri Lanka. Check out the Cricket Club Café, a traditional haunt of the Barmy Army whenever the England cricket team are in town.
The best city hotels also have big swimming pools, often with views of the ocean and modern gymnasiums. And, although no city is without risk, Colombo’s relative lack of violent crime and general love of children makes it a city to put everybody at ease.
It is a curious thing, but children also seem to love tuk tuks. Journeying around the city in these tiny open-sided vehicles seems to inspire waves of pleasure for so many. That’s why we’ve even been moved to arrange a special tour of Colombo by Tuk Tuk.
