Kandy has been a staple part of family holidays in Sri Lanka since tourism began to take hold half a century ago. Sri Lanka’s hill country capital has always been well stoked with good-quality hotels to serve the tourists that flock to see the Temple of the Tooth and, in August, the Kandy Perahera – one of the grandest processions in the world. And there is always the chance to take in a Kandyan cultural show.
Red Dot has worked hard to offer other activities that can fill the days in this famous lakeside town. If the family has taken in a cultural show it might be the perfect excuse to let your children loose on learning to play a Sri Lankan drum. We’ll probably stop short of suggesting a spot of fire eating afterwards.
Watching elephants is also a hugely popular pastime for families in Sri Lanka. Watching these noble animals close-up, and seeing the youngsters cavorting about, is an unforgettable experience. If you don’t see the elephants in the wild, we are careful to recommend organisations that follow best practice such as the Millenium Elephant Foundation which works to improve the treatment of captive elephants in Sri Lanka and where your family can learn more about the complex conservation issues.
