Although golf in Colombo is limited to just one option, the Royal Colombo Golf Club is a delightfully challenging course which provides a lush oasis of tranquillity within Sri Lanka’s bustling capital city. Built in 1879, Royal Colombo Golf Club was only the second club in the world to receive the royal charter – and it is worthy of this accolade. Its colonial roots are still clearly evidenced by the clubhouse, with its teak-panelled Governor’s Bar and cool veranda, and it remains Sri Lanka’s most formal course – although one of the most relaxed clubs of ‘Royal’ status.
Suitable for golfers of mixed abilities, the inviting fairways are scattered with obstacles such as large trees, water traps and the local train which rattles cheerfully through the course. The course remains consistent throughout the year, although it can get a little boggy in places from June – October after the rains.
Escape Colombo’s charmingly chaotic streets for a day and lose yourself in beautiful surroundings and the joys of the game. Discuss your round over a drink afterwards – the bar offers a good selection of wines and a wide ranging menu.
