The best way to explore Sri Lanka’s wildlife in the north-west coast is to visit Wilpattu National Park, one of the biggest and most historic national parks in Sri Lanka. Most of Sri Lanka’s wildlife can be found at Wilpattu, including the island’s ‘big game’ such as elephants, water buffalo, Spotted Deer and Sloth Bear, although the biggest attraction is the Sri Lankan Leopard. The park is also home to Mugger Crocodile and a variety of snakes, as well as abundant species of endemic and migratory birds and several types of butterfly.
As well as Wilpattu National Park, wildlife enthusiasts should head out to sea from Kalpitiya to try and spot whales and dolphins. Up to 300 Spinner Dolphins can be seen together at one time, flinging themselves out of the waves in an incredible acrobatic show, and whales can also be spotted in these waters, including the majestic Blue Whale. The best time of year to go on this boat excursion is between December and March.
Another wildlife option along the north-west coast of Sri Lanka is to visit the Annaiwilundawa Wetland, an important resting site for both resident and migratory bird species. Comprised of a cluster of seven tanks, numerous birds can be seen here as well as some common species and very rare types of butterfly, including the elusive Oakblue.
