There are several opportunities for practising yoga in Galle and the surrounding coastal towns, including reputable independent venues as well as hotels, as the Galle Coast has always been a popular tourist destinations and has a large ex-pat community.
Why not take a private class with Lara Baumann, one of the most experienced practitioners in the region who has gained teaching qualifications in the UK, India and Sri Lanka. The ancient healing art of Ayurveda is integrated into her practice, so guests can expect an intense and rejuvenating session. Classes can be held at the magnificent tree-top yoga studio at Tri Lanka, at her tranquil house or in your own villa.
For more flexibility, consider joining an open class at one of the many independent establishments in the area. Highly recommended is Asiri, a local practitioner with his own retreat just outside of Galle who receives rave reviews for his classes.
There are also yoga classes in Unawatuna, easily accessible for those staying along the Galle coastline. Sri Yoga Shala is poised on a hill 1km inland from Unawatuna Thalpe, offering spectacular views in an enchantingly relaxing setting. Daily classes are available in a variety of styles, including Vinyasa flow and Hatha, as well as longer workshops and retreats. Classes are good value but fill up quickly, especially at the weekend, so ask at your hotel to help you arrange a booking in advance. Indulge in a massage or a swim straight after class.
