A 'wallawwa' is typically an old manor house with architectural features of columns, courtyards and verandahs. The Wallawwa is just that and much more with an interesting history that dates back to the mid 17th century when it was owned by a head chieftain of Galle. This colonial bungalow has been lovingly restored maintaining its old world charm with a blend of luxurious comforts and stylish design. The bedrooms are situated around the central courtyard and pond. The restaurant serves sumptuous Asian fusion cuisine. Relax and unwind at the Z spa or laze by the swimming pool set amidst one of the finest private gardens in Sri Lanka. Several new luxurious suites, restaurant and bar were added in November 2012.

There are 17 luxurious bedrooms and suites with stylish interiors furnished with king-size, four-poster Balinese beds dressed in fine white linen. In-room facilities include flat screen TV with satellite channels, wifi internet, coffee/tea facility, and electronic safe. The terrazzo lined en-suite bathrooms have twin vanities and rain showers.

Wallawwa Bedrooms (35 sq. metres): The two Wallawwa Bedrooms are well suited for guests looking for a short pre or post flight stopover.

Garden Suites (55 sq. metres): The 12 Garden Suites are more spacious and have a sitting area opening out to a private verandah and garden.

Family Suites (90 sq. metres): There are two Family Suites with each consisting of a Garden Suite and an interconnecting twin Wallawwa Bedroom, which has its own separate entrance and ensuite bathroom.

Mountbatten Suite (150 sq. metres): Over double the size of the Garden Suites, this luxurious Suite has a large sitting room and a private garden with plunge pool. The expansive ensuite bathroom has a rain shower and terrazzo bath. This suite is perfect for honeymooners, but equally good for families as there is an additional ensuite twin bedroom for children that come complete with Xbox and satellite TV.

As in a traditional Wallawwa, guests are greeted at the front verandah which leads to an elegantly decorated lounge and the central courtyard beyond.  Dine at The Verandah restaurant surrounded by lush tropical gardens.  Asian-fusion cuisine is served here prepared with locally purchased fresh vegetables, seafood and meats.  Wallawwa’s signature dishes include Coconut Crumbed Tiger Prawns, Malay Chilli Crab and Ceylonese Red Chicken Curry served with a selection of vegetable curries, sambols and pickles. There are several vegetarian options as well as a special children’s menu.  Meals are also served in the gardens or in the privacy of your own bedroom.  A range of alcoholic beverages are on offer at the Verandah bar. Relax and rejuvenate after a tiring flight at the Z Spa offering a range of signature massages, scrubs and wraps, with a hint of traditional Ayurvedic techniques and a unique array of other health and beauty alternatives.  There is also a `Kidz' massage on offer to help calm and relax children between the ages of 2-17 years.

Other facilities include a library with interesting titles on Sri Lankan and international philosophy, politics, culture and heritage; and a Study equipped with wifi internet and iMac free-of-charge.  The swimming pool is tucked away in a quiet corner of the extensive gardens.  Wallawwa’s gardens scattered with giant ferns and tall tropical trees attract numerous birds. Do your gift shopping at the in-house gift shop which supports local craftsmen and entrepreneurs. The unique collection of gift items for sale are sourced locally and produced by small craft enterprises in Sri Lanka. All profits from this shop are donated to the hotel’s chosen charity.

Visit the coastal town of Negombo with its sun-kissed beaches, watersports, catamarans and fishing villages, colonial period architecture, restaurants and beachside cafes. Consider a morning’s excursion to the capital city of Colombo where the main attractions include the National Museum, temples and kovils, and shopping for gems and jewelry, clothes and home ware. Shops worth visiting include Paradise Road, Barefoot and ODEL.
