Mud House Sri Lanka

Media Reviews
"'Even before reaching it I know I am heading somewhere special. A giant rock glows golden in the early morning sun, a boulder hanging precariously from its edge. We veer of the tarmac road heading deeper into the Dry Zone jungle. On either side of the dirt rack are lakes with birds diving freely into the still waters, whilst grey langur monkeys swing playfully through the heavy-bowed trees…..Now on foot…..through a maze of winding pathways to my home for the next five days – a thatched –roof traditional village hut made of mud from the local lake, "

Location
The Mudhouse is a rustic eco retreat nestled at the foot of an ancient rock temple in Anamaduwa in the remote north-west district of Puttalam. Set amidst 60 acres of wilderness and tranquil lake, a stay at the Mudhouse is an escapist experience of Sri Lanka's rural splendour. The Mudhouse is less than two hours from the international airport and a three-hour drive from Colombo. It is also well sited for the cultural sites of Anuradhapura, Yapahuwa, Panduwasnuwara, and the Wilpattu wildlife sanctuary.
Introduction
The Mudhouse finds joy from simplicity. It lies in a remote rural village, off a gravel road beyond the white dagoba of the Paramakanda Rock temple, amidst a jungle thicket shaded by Tamarind trees. In this simple settlement, guests stay in wattle and daub huts, eat traditional Sri Lankan rice and curry cooked over a hearth, bathe at the well, and share the surroundings wilderness with birds, butterflies, and buffalo. The Mudhouse consists of sleeping and dining areas built out of natural local materials. Traditional village construction methods are used - clay walls and floors, and natural tree barks used as columns to support roofs thatched with coconut palms. A few essential pieces of furniture are available, some made of driftwood. The surrounding wilderness is a naturalist’s dream. Many hours can be spent in a hammock, the tranquility enlivened only by the sounds of nature. The Mudhouse is a true experience of typical Sri Lankan village, where the hosts will welcome you with open hearts, share their simple lifestyle, and impart their knowledge of this ancient land with pride.

Accommodation
The Mudhouse consists of a main dwelling with a bedroom furnished with a double bed on a raised clay platform and fitted with mosquito netting, an indoor toilet with w/c, a small library with books on wildlife and the Parmakanda Rock temple, and a small sitting area. Just adjoining this dwelling, separated by a palm fence, is a well with clear water for bathing. A separate, open-sided dwelling with thatched roof serves as an additional space to be used by guests as they wish: perhaps as an outdoor bedroom (the attached bamboo tats can be rolled down for those wanting more privacy, and a comfortable double bed with mosquito netting is provided), a dining area, lounging area or even yoga and meditation space. Hammocks, mats, beds and wicker chairs are available. An additional wattle-and-daub dwelling was added in 2007 just a five minute walk through the scrub jungle overlooking the lake, with accommodation for another six adults. This self-contained facility consists of a sleeping area, two bathrooms, open-air shower, and dining area.
Facilities
Sri Lankan dishes are prepared in clay pots over a hearth, using locally available fresh meats, fish and vegetables. Meals are served according to a guest's wishes - under a tree, by the lake, or within the dome-shaped dining hut. The in-house cook will willingly teach Sri Lankan cookery, and even take you to the local fair to purchase the ingredients. There is no electricity or hot showers here. The glow of lanterns and candles light up the dwellings at night. For those that insist on their own music, there is a small battery-powered music system to plug in your CD player or digital devices. The Mudhouse is managed by Kumar, a respected village personality, who contributes to the development of the community and the ancient Parmakanda temple, and who can share his knowledge about wildlife and cultural heritage.
Excursions
The lake adjacent to the Mudhouse is ideal for swimming or bird watching. The Paramankanda Rock Temple, just minutes away from Mudhouse, has ancient frescoes, rock inscriptions and Buddha statues. Explore the surrounding villages on foot or on a bike and experience rural village life. Other activities include bird watching at Anawilundawa bird sanctuary, leopard spotting in Wilpattu National Park, mangrove and lagoon boat rides, day trips to the ancient capitals of Yapahuwa and Pandurasnuwara, and a visit to a Toddy Tavern for a taste of the local brew.
