Location
Palm Paradise is located by a gorgeous stretch of beach, in an undulating palm grove, near to the south coast village of Tangalle. This deliberately rustic settlement appeals to hardened, independent travellers yearning for peaceful accommodation in tranquil, natural surroundings -- and we never fail to be delighted when some luxury travellers insist on spending a couple of nights here and profess to adore it. The journey from Colombo's International Airport will take approximately five hours.
Introduction
There is a distinct back-to-nature feel about Palm Paradise which involves an element of "roughing it", but which continues to win it many admirers. The beach remains relatively untouched here and is visited by sea eagles, pelicans and cormorants, and at night time even the occasional egg-laying Marine turtle. Parrots may rest in the trees or monkeys and squirrels wander through the grass.

Accommodation
22 wooden cabanas, on stilts, are scattered around a gently-sloping palm grove, which leads down to a beautiful sandy cove sheltered by rocks and a small reef. The cabanas, built from ageing palm trees, are rudimentary, but they possess basic comforts - tables, chairs, beds with mosquito nets, attached bathroom with cold-water shower, wash basin and w/c. The only a/c is natural, in the form of the shade of the palm trees and sea breezes.
Facilities
The restaurant serves predominantly Sri Lankan food (all rates are on half-board basis) and has received good feedback. There is a limited Ayurvedic wellness service that offers relaxing massages. Other facilities include IDD telephone, fax, and access to e mail can be arranged on request.
Excursions
Tangalle and the surrounding areas are renowned for its superb unspoiled and undeveloped beaches but there are other attractions nearby, including Yala National Park, one of the largest national parks in the island where elephant and leopard can be seen, a short 90-minute drive away. Sinharaja Rainforest, a magnificent strip of virgin rainforest now protected by UNESCO, also provides for a rewarding day out. Visit Rakuwa, a small fishing village near Tangalle where a fascinating Marine Turtle Conservation project is helping to save this endangered species.
