The Sri Lanka Travel Specialists
As the name suggests, this is a remote holiday retreat where all you hear is bird call, leaves rustling in the wind and the sound of the sea in the distance. Kahandamodara is situated on acres of wilderness where peacocks, monkeys and mongoose roam free and is just a 15 minute catamaran ride away from the secluded beaches of the south coast. This is a perfect holiday retreat for those seeking peace and tranquillity. Created by its Sri Lankan owners – who also own Back of Beyond Pidurangala near the Sigiriya Rock Fortress – this eco-friendly retreat has been designed with the greatest respect to nature and the surrounding village community. Buildings are designed using locally available materials and have rust coloured walls, contrasting turquoise doors and windows, polished cement floors and clay-tiled roofs. Interiors are tastefully designed with timber and contemporary polished cement details in the beds, dining table and wash basins. Guests can choose to stay at the main bungalow which has three bedrooms and an airy upper deck, ideal for yoga or meditation, or in the cottage which has a large bedroom, private dining area and veranda.
The two-storey bungalow consists of three comfortable double bedrooms, of which one is more spacious and has a loft that can sleep an additional person. All rooms open out to the gardens and the wilderness beyond. The ensuite bathrooms have a wash basin, w/c and h/w shower. The cottage, situated separately, has a large bedroom that can sleep three and an ensuite bathroom with a bathtub and h/w shower. This bedroom opens out to a veranda furnished with a four-seater table and built in lounge chairs.
The upper floor of the open-sided bungalow is light and breezy, used for reading, bird watching, yoga or meditation. The ground floor has a dining area with a ten-seater cement and timber dining table where Sri Lankan rice and curries and light snacks are served, prepared with fresh vegetables and fruit from their own gardens or from the village market and seafood purchased daily from the local fisherman. A garden BBQ is organised on a starlit night. Alcohol is not available here, but guests are welcome to bring their own. Kahandamodara is equipped with Wi-Fi, mountain bikes, a catamaran, life jackets, binoculars and knowledgeable staff who can take you on adventurous nature trails, biking, river fishing, boating and kayaking. For those interested in organic farming and environmental conservation, the in-house Agronomist will be happy to share his knowledge and experience.
Back of Beyond – Kahandamodara is a tranquil eco-retreat set on ten acres of wilderness in a village, nearby an estuary close to the southern coastal town of Tangalle.
