Location
Ashburnham Estate is a welcoming five-bedroom guesthouse about an hour north of Kandy on a 75-acre tea plantation overlooked by the picturesque Knuckles mountain range. Situated in the rural village of Elkaduwa, Ashburnham can be reached via Kandy, Matale, or the Cultural Triangle and is on the northern route into the Knuckles.
Introduction
Ashburnham is an old planter’s bungalow that has been caringly renovated by its current British owner into a welcoming and restful holiday retreat that is ideal for couples or even families with children. There is lots to do on the estate from trekking and river baths by the waterfall to enjoying the Sri Lankan tea experience. Or just laze by the poolside and take in the magnificent mountain views. Ashburnham is laid-back, very much a home from home that provides a personalised service. The bungalow can be booked per room or in its entirety.

Accommodation
There are five comfortable ensuite bedrooms furnished with double or twin beds, writing desk, and wardrobe. All have mountain views. Ensuite bathrooms have h/w showers.

Family Room: This room has a bedroom with a double bed and a separate area furnished with two bunk beds that can sleep up to four children.

Bay Room: This is a smaller twin room with French windows opening out to the garden.

Balcony Room: Furnished with a double bed, this room has a private terrace overlooking the mountains.

Suite Room: This is the most spacious accommodation and is linked to a second room called the Hideaway and can be used together by families or separately.

Hideaway: Accessed from the front garden, this room is furnished with a double bed and has a small sitting area.
Facilities
Ashburnham is managed by an English couple, Carol and Rex who personally supervise the meals and attends to the guests. Discuss your meal preferences with Carol and she will cook sumptuous western dishes prepared with home grown vegetables and herbs. There is also a local cook that prepares Sri Lankan rice and curries. Meals are served in the dining room or out on the terrace overlooking the mountains. Fresh juices, soft drinks, coffee and Ceylon tea is served here. Guests are welcome to bring their own alcoholic beverages. The living room has a fireplace which is lit by night, a library and plenty of board games to keep you occupied on a rainy day. Laptop with internet connection is available for those wanting to check their e mails. The immediate gardens at Ashburnham are beautifully landscaped and have a tree house, garden swing and swimming pool with a waterslide for children. Ashburnham’s gardens are a nature lover’s paradise with numerous species of birds, butterflies, giant squirrels and monkeys hovering about on the tree tops. During certain times of the year, a 38 year year old elephant named Menike is in residence at Ashburnham and children can go on elephant back rides and join in on taking care of her.
Excursions
Explore Ashburnham’s landscaped gardens and extensive 75 acre tea and spice estate. Enjoy the tea experience from plucking tea to a visit to the tea factory where the tea is processed. Trek to the 60ft waterfall nearby and take a dip in the fresh river water. Extensive treks are possible from here into the Knuckles mountain range through the northern route to the scenic Riverston Gap. Located within the district of Kandy and Matale in central Sri Lanka, the Knuckles mountain range, so called because of its appearance resembles a set of knuckles of a clenched fist, consists of five mountain peaks and several other smaller peaks. With the highest point about 6,000 ft above sea level the Knuckles span an extensive region covering 155 sq kms of the island. A wide variety of rare and endemic flora and fauna makes this wilderness area a storehouse of rich biodiversity. Trek through dense forests, along rivers and waterfalls, past tea plantations and terraced paddy fields and visit some of the small rural village communities.
