Sri Lanka's newest hotels and villas

Originally a private residence of Lord Mountbatten, this century old bungalow has been fully refurbished and reopened in 2014 as a five-bedroom boutique villa that offers a relaxing hill country holiday experience just 15 minutes from Kandy town. The original features including fire places, gabled roofs, and large living spaces with high ceilings have all been retained giving it an old world feel. Interiors are decorated with antique style furniture and photos of old Ceylon. The surrounding tea gardens are still maintained and give an interesting insight into Ceylon Tea. Mountbatten Bungalow is the sister property of Aliya Resort in the Cultural Triangle and Maalu Maalu Resort on the North East Coast.
Taylors Hill is named after James Taylor who introduced tea production to old Ceylon. Built by a British planter over 100 years ago, the bungalow is distinctly different from most other plantation bungalows in the hill country in its architecture, imposing size and stone façade. This spacious two-storey bungalow has been refurbished combining luxurious comfort and a cozy ambience. The stylish interiors are bright and airy and decorated in vibrant colours, luxurious soft furnishings and plush sofas. Taylors Hill is set on manicured lawns edged with colourful flower beds. There is much to do here including trekking and mountain biking. Others may wish to just relax in the gardens with a good book and a cup of Ceylon Tea and take in the beautiful mountain views. The room rates at Taylors Hill include a three-course breakfast, afternoon tea & cake, and dinner. Lunch can be included on FB basis. Families with children are welcome. A minimum of two nights stay is recommended in order to experience this wonderful holiday retreat. Taylors Hill is owned by Manor House Concepts that also owns The Kandy House, The Last House, Coco Tangalla and Casa Heliconia – all renowned boutique villas in Kandy and the South Coast.
Originally owned by a Kandyan family, the Stone House was fully refurbished in 2014 by its new owners and is now a five-bedroom boutique villa offering luxurious accommodation, a secluded holiday setting and a personalised service. The house is designed with a stone façade that gives way to cozy living spaces within. The luxurious interiors are decorated with contemporary art, plush sofas and four-poster beds. The well appointed bedrooms and suites open out to private terraces where quiet moments can be spent reading a book and taking in the mountain views. The terraced gardens with the swimming pool at a level above are ideal for taking in the sun or dining under a moonlit sky. The Stone House can be booked by the room and is perfect for a romantic honeymoon or a family holiday. The Stone House is the sister property of Deer Park hotel in Polonnaruwa and Clove Villa in Kandy.
The Secret Yala enjoys a spectacular seaside setting in a sandy, dry zone jungle inhabited by monkeys, numerous birds and even the occasional elephant. The campsite consists of five mobile tents with attached bathroomssurrounded by wilderness; rustic beach huts with thatched roofs set at the edge of the cliff for taking in the fabulous sunrise; and a main lounge-cum-dining tent where guests can mingle and share their wildlife experiences.

Rise early to the chatter of birds and sip a cup of coffee in your own beach hut looking out to sea. Those heading off on a morning jeep safari to the Yala National Park will leave at 6am while others might wish to spend a more leisurely morning enjoying the immediate wilderness and even head off on a bicycle to the village of Kirinda nearby to visit the ancient Kirinda temple. The stretch of ocean in this region is not safe for swimming but, ideal for early morning walks and even beach side BBQs under a starlit sky. The Secret Yala follows strict eco-friendly policies ensuring environmental conservation and protection of the wildlife. There is no electricity in these areas, but a silent generator is run at nights to run a few lights and the pedestal fans in each tent.

This camping experience can be booked on a FB basis which includes the tented accommodation; breakfast, lunch and dinner, bottled water, fresh juices, tea and coffee. There is also an `all inclusive’ rate which provides additional services such as one game drive per day accompanied by an experienced guide and park entry fees; snacks and bottled water on game drives; chilled beer and wine served at the campsite.
