Parrotfish Bay is one of Sri Lanka's most escapist boutique beach villas. Sold by the room, too, to put it in the range of many seeking a place of rare serenity. Just south of Mirissa, this gleamingly light, modern villa looks out onto one of the most beautiful bays on Sri Lanka's south coast, an utterly idyllic spot that can encourage the Wow factor in even Sri Lanka's most sated traveller. The villa is well-appointed, stylish yet unfussy, as if quietly privileged to enjoy one of the most romantic outlooks on Sri Lanka's coast.
There are three rooms on the first floor and three slightly cheaper rooms on the ground floor. Each floor has its own dining and living spaces. All rooms have light grey floor tiles, a/c and ceiling fan, modern bathrooms with shower, king-size bed, DVD player and satellite TV, hairdryer and toiletries, safe.
Nila Balcony Suite (30 sqm): This has indigo hues and has ocean views from its private balcony, sumptuous sofa and chairs, bath with shower, antique-style writing desk, shared dining room and living room. Extra bed or baby cot on request.
Paradise Suite (34 sqm): A bright and airy room with uplifting, spring-like green tones and a large window. Soft chairs, antique-style desk, shared dining room and living room. Private terrace.
Kandyan Suite (38 sqm): Regally dressed in reds and black with imposing wardrobe in traditional style, Extra bed or baby cot on request.
Ocean Suite (28 sqm): A ground floor room with turquoise rooms and French windows leading out to the gardens and ocean beyond.
Coral Room (22 sqm): A simpler and smaller ground floor room, with splashes of coral pink.
Lotus Room (21 sqm): A ground floor room in vibrant purples with the added advantage of shared dining room and living room.
Common spaces are light and airy with white-tiled floor, sofas, soft chairs and tables. A large infinity pool has a view over a neatly-trimmed lawn to the cove beyond. Wifi throughout. There is a natural rock pool in front of the villa which offers safe swimming, and where wading birds search for food, and the deserted sandy cove on the southern side of the villa is a joy. Food, led by Sri Lankan and seafood dishes, has been warmly praised. BYO alcohol.
Just south of Mirissa, on Sri Lanka's south coast, take a rudimentary track down to Parrotfish Bay, where the road reaches its end in one of Sri Lanka's most romantic settings.
