The Sri Lanka Travel Specialists
Masada, whose name is derived from the Hebrew word meaning fortress, is truly that, offering a touch of Tuscany in the Sri Lankan hills. Overlooking the Victoria Reservoir, one of the best-known and most scenic reservoirs of Sri Lanka, Masada is a haven for those seeking a quiet, soulful stay coupled with warm, personal service. Designed, owned and managed by Corrie Boomgaard-Heyneker, who returned to her island of birth after 30 years in Europe, Masada oozes Italian charm and the interiors display a plethora of antiques and collectibles from Europe. This also means children under 15 are not accepted at the villa. Masada also has three lovely dogs, but they can be kept in a separate property on request.
Masada consists of three luxurious and well-designed rooms. Adorned with carpets overlaying terracotta floors which have been caringly installed, each room is unique in its décor and consists of an open plan bathroom with a vintage sink and an enclosed w/c. The rooms are air-conditioned and come with an old-fashioned bath tub to relax in. French doors open out to a spacious private balcony, ideal for enjoying views overlooking the Victoria Reservoir over a cup of tea. Each room has a maximum occupancy of two persons.
Castle Room: Also called the Bridal Suite, this room is furnished in light hues of yellow and contains a generous and comfortable four-poster king-sized bed sitting below a gorgeous chandelier.
Wedgewood Room: Inspired by Jasperware which was first developed by Josiah Wedgewood in the latter part of the 1700s, the blues of this room are a tribute to the shades associated with this type of pottery. The room also contains a four-poster king-sized bed as well as a large amount of porcelain antiques.
Cool Mint Room: Decorated in minty green, this room contains two single four-poster beds and is ideal for two friends travelling together.
There is much to do at Masada which boasts a generous saltwater swimming pool with a Jacuzzi, a small rocky garden with views over the reservoir to the Knuckles range beyond, as well as a library with a wide variety of reading material. The library also has a TV and opens to a semi-outdoor clay oven and BBQ which lead down to a small yet cosy alfresco dining area. Masada also has a snooker table and a fully-operational vintage jukebox in a separate building close by. There is Wi-Fi coverage throughout the villa. The host is able to prepare European and Western dishes, although Sri Lankan options are also available. There is no menu and meals can always be discussed according to preference.
Slightly more than an hour from Kandy and half an hour from the Victoria Golf Course, Villa Masada would be ideal for those looking to throw some golf in to the mix. Travelling by road from Colombo will take roughly four-and-a-half hours. You can head to Nuwara Eliya from Masada, which will take about three hours.
