The Sri Lanka Travel Specialists
Havelock Place Bungalow has long been a precious thing in Colombo: a characterful small hotel offering great historical charm. This peaceful and elegant alternative to the major five-star properties began life in the 1940s as two separate private colonial bungalows which were skilfully merged and restored by Sri Lankan owners and are now overseen by the owners of Galle Face Hotel. Comfortable rooms in colonial style cannot be termed boutique, but they are characterfully decorated with original Dutch period antiques and many find them a delightful throwback. A garden restaurant is set amidst tropical trees and bird song - some trees even grow through the tiled verandah roof - and caring staff help make this a tempting hideaway for those of creative disposition, perhaps at the beginning or the end of your holiday in Sri Lanka.
Havelock Place has three Suites and four Standard Rooms all with a/c and ensuite bathrooms with h/w showers or bathtubs, wash basin, and w/c. Most rooms have private patios or access to the gardens. All suites and standard rooms have WiFi and are elegantly furnished with antique Dutch period furniture including canopied four poster beds, writing bureaus, and almairahs.
The sitting room, which also doubles up as a small art gallery, is the social focal point. Meals are served in the dining room (which was upgraded in 2018) or on the patio in the leafy garden alongside a small swimming pool and Jacuzzi. A thoughtful a la carte restaurant, restyled as Coi at The Bungalow, offers fusion dishes as well as delicious desserts.
Havelock Bungalow has a secluded setting in central Colombo that will delight clients looking for a tasteful, personal touch. The drive from Colombo's international airport is about 45 minutes.
