The Sri Lanka Travel Specialists
Far Cry is a six-bedroom retreat edged by the Mahaweli River on the edge of Wasgamova national park, one of Sri Lanka's least discovered. It is surrounded by untouched wilderness home to numerous birds, monkeys and the occasional wild elephant. The property is set on an extensive working plantation: pick the produce with the farmers and use it to cook traditional Sri Lankan curries. Guests can also go bird-watching or visit nearby Wasgamuva National Park, before cooling off with a dip in the pool. Far Cry follows eco-friendly policies which help to conserve the surrounding environment, and provides much-needed employment in an area largely untouched by tourism.
The retreat consists of a two-storey main building which houses the lounge, a restaurant which opens out onto the swimming pool, and three bedrooms. There is a separate building closer to the main entrance which has three more bedrooms.
The six bedrooms are split into four doubles and two family rooms. All bedrooms have spacious interiors and are furnished with king-sized beds or two double beds. In-room facilities include a/c, overhead fans, a mini-fridge, tea/coffee facilities, a LED TV with satellite channels and Wi-Fi. They all have ensuite bathrooms with h/w showers.
One of the ground floor bedrooms has wheel chair access and an ensuite bathroom with commode aids and larger doorways, making it suitable for those with mobility difficulties. A wheelchair is available upon request.
Both Sri Lankan and western cuisine is served in the dining room, prepared with fresh vegetables and fruit from the farm. Far Cry’s manager is a keen bird-watcher and will guide you round birding trails along the river: over 90 species of birds have been recorded within the estate.
This eco-retreat is set on a 12-acre plantation in the remote village of Hettipola, on the border of Wasgamuva National Park. Maduru Oya National Park, home to Sri Lanka’s indigenous inhabitants, is 30 minutes away, as are the ancient Buddhist temple and reservoirs of Mahiyangana village. Knuckles Mountain Range, Ella and Pasikudah are also within reach.
