Urban Castle, once the home of an antique collector and his wife, is a charming hotel near Kandy that pays tribute to antiques in all its forms. Situated in Pilimathalawe, 30 minutes west of the historic city of Kandy, the hotel serves as a great budget option for those with a taste for minimalism with an artistic flavour.
Behind an unprepossessing exterior lies an imaginative world. The doors to Urban Castle open on to a well-maintained garden, infinity-edged pool and a three-storey building which consist of six rooms. A giant antique wooden horse welcomes guests to the living area which is engagingly decorated with an assortment of brass and wooden antiques.
The six rooms are categorised into 4 Urban Relax rooms and 2 Urban Romance rooms spread across two floors.
Urban Romance: These rooms are air-conditioned and are decorated with ancient art, artefacts and elements that represent Kandyan history and architecture. A double bed mattress is propped on the polished cement floor with a soft mosquito netting hanging across the four posters of the bed. The ensuite bathroom has h/w showers. These rooms can be tripled.
Urban Relax: These rooms are similarly designed and come with a double bed supported on a concrete base. Ensuite bathrooms have a shower area and a bathtub. Guests in Urban Relax rooms have access to a wooden attic where they can relax in privacy.
The restaurant and the infinity edged pool share an attractive corner pavilion as soon as you enter the premises overlooking the garden. The menu at the restaurant offers a combination of traditional Sri Lankan dishes and western favourites. The hotel does not have a bar but can arrange beer and wine on request.
