The Nanee sits in the medieval heart of Bhaktapur, a short walk from the UNESCO-listed Durbar Square, in a city that feels several centuries removed from the capital.
Inspired by the Nyatapola Temple and the principles of Vaastu Shastra, the property is built around courtyard living and designed to reflect the five natural elements; its 18 rooms and suites weave handwoven textiles, brass, wood and terracotta into a setting that is both contemporary and rooted in Newari craft. The name itself means "inner courtyard" in Newari, and that spirit of gathering runs through the whole property, from the rooftop bar to the Chef's Table, where a six to ten-course Newari tasting menu is prepared around stories of the city's culture and culinary history.
What we love
- Bhaktapur is the most atmospheric of the Kathmandu Valley's three ancient cities, and this is the finest base from which to experience it; stepping out into the medieval lanes at dawn, with the property's guided morning walk included in every stay, is something guests talk about long after they get home
- The Chef's Table is genuinely special; a six to ten-course tasting menu built around Newari culinary tradition, with storytelling woven through each course
- Every stay includes a guided dawn walking tour and a traditional welcome ceremony; the whole property is designed around genuine cultural connection rather than simply providing accommodation
- The name means "inner courtyard" in Newari and the architecture reflects it; the sense of community and gathering here is unlike most boutique hotels
Bhaktapur is 13 kilometres from central Kathmandu and works best as a dedicated one or two-night stop rather than a base for city sightseeing; Kathmandu is an easy 20-minute taxi ride away
There is no lift, as local building regulations within the UNESCO-listed site do not permit one. The team assists with luggage, but it is worth knowing for guests with mobility considerations
