Inspiration
Experience Sri Lanka at its most authentic—from the window of a train where landscapes shift from vibrant market towns to mist-covered mountains dotted with tea pickers working in emerald-green plantations.
Sri Lanka's railway journeys offer an exceptional way to experience the island's diverse landscapes. The network, built during British colonial rule in 1864, winds through some of the country's most spectacular terrain—from terraced tea plantations in the central highlands to coastal stretches where ancient temples meet the Indian Ocean. Whilst these trains prioritise authentic travel over luxury, the unhurried pace of rail travel reveals perspectives impossible from the road, creating an intimate connection with Sri Lanka's natural beauty and cultural heritage that more than compensates for any lack of modern amenities.
Featured train journeys
The morning railway journey from Kandy to the highlands represents one of the world's greatest train experiences. As you ascend up to 6,000 feet above sea level toward Nuwara Eliya, Ella, or Dickoya, the dramatic landscape unfolds before you. Wind past emerald tea plantations, towering peaks, and cascading waterfalls while the cool mountain air fills your senses.
The journey passes through several charming stations including Hatton (gateway to Adam's Peak), Nanu Oya (for Nuwara Eliya), and Haputale, each offering unique opportunities to break the journey and explore Sri Lanka's hill country. The most scenic section runs between Hatton and Haputale stations, where the train winds through the heart of the tea plantation region.
