Dulmini Ekanayake

Assistant Sales and Service Manager, Colombo Office

For all her years in the business, Dulmini's idea of a perfect evening is a simple one: a seat on the edge of a reservoir in Anuradhapura, a plate of fried lake fish, and the scenery left to do the talking. Dulmini came into travel in 2005, helped build the tailor-made side of one of Sri Lanka's best-known operators, and first joined Red Dot in 2014. You will find very few people globally with Dulmini's knowledge of Sri Lanka, and she is a core part of the Red Dot team.

A safari to remember

Death from all corners in Yala

Years ago, on an afternoon drive through a flooded Yala, our jeep slid off balance and two wheels dropped into a ditch that was filling fast with water. As we climbed out to take a look, the tracker started shouting at us to get back in — a crocodile had slipped into the rising water and a lone elephant was wading in from the other side.

I still call it death from all corners, and I will admit I prayed for dear life until help arrived from the Sri Lanka Army. I tell it now with a smile, but it is a fair reminder that the wild is exactly that.

What Dulmini brings to your trip

Her range is genuinely broad. Wildlife and safari, and culture and history, are the threads that run deepest, but she is equally at ease with honeymoons, family holidays, multigenerational trips, solo adventures, and journeys built around religion or birdlife. Whatever the brief, the instinct is to find the version of the trip that actually suits the people taking it.

Where I have travelled

Sri Lanka is the country I know in my bones, and the Cultural Triangle and wildlife parks are where I am happiest. Yala pulls me back again and again, though I always plan to avoid the crowds by selecting the right dates, block and accommodation. Beyond home I have spent time in India and the Maldives, and lived in Pune for three and a half years.

The most remote corner

The most far-flung place I have been is Dehiattakandiya, a village in the Ampara District in the east. I went to help run a five-day workshop for young artists who had no other way of showing their work to a wider audience, and came away genuinely moved by what they had made with so little.

What sets a Red Dot trip apart

It starts with living here. We know the small, characterful properties Red Dot uses and the people who run them, and work closely with the chauffeur guides and local hosts who turn a good itinerary into a seamless one. With teams in both Sri Lanka and the UK, support spans both time zones.

Away from the desk

Outside work I love exploring more of Sri Lanka whenever I get the chance. Closer to home I read, play the piano, and work through whatever films my colleague Lahiru has talked me into that week.
