Amankora Paro

Paro, Bhutan
Banner image image
Enclosed by blue pine forest at the northern edge of Paro Valley, Amankora Paro exudes a serene and still atmosphere. The lodge is reached via a winding, tree-lined road, where light is gently filtered between tall trees and the outside world seems to recede entirely. Birdsong echoes through the trees as a constant calming backdrop and the air holds the perfume of pine resin. It’s a setting that invites you to indulge in peace.

The lodge’s architecture reflects the forest setting with its white-washed stone and timber cladding emerging confidently from the forest floor. Inside, the calm décor uses muted tones and wooden accents to create a monastic sense of balance. The rooms feel quietly luxurious, curated to mirror the tranquillity of their surroundings. Large timber windows hold echoes of traditional rabsel frames and enclose layers of trees and shifting light, making the ever-changing views a feature of the room in themselves.

Wellness is cleverly woven into the fabric of a stay here. The two-storey spa is centred around immersive Himalayan hot stone baths, employing ancient Bhutanese bathing rituals. Spa days are gentle and peaceful, whether you’re sinking into treatment rooms scented with native botanicals or simply resting between sessions.

The food here is shaped by both the setting and the season. Meals in the dining room overlook the dramatic ruins of Drukgyel Dzong, its weathered stone walls blending with the encroaching forest. While outside dining is based around the intimacy of the fire pit terrace, as dusk gently settles in the surrounding forest. Bhutanese flavours and dishes are gently accented by refined international cuisine.

The hotel has an exhaustive list of experiences on offer that quietly link guests to the living culture of the valley. From archery lessons to prayer flag printing, calligraphy sessions to farmers’ market tours and hiking trails. And when you’re ready to relax, the hotel’s library offers a magical retreat, encouraging guests to lose afternoons among age-old stories.

Amankora Paro is a place of profound depth, a forest sanctuary where wellness, culture and landscape effortlessly intersect. It offers a resonant, thoughtful and restorative experience of Bhutan, where guests can fully immerse themselves in the beauty of this profound kingdom.

What we love

    • The staggering views of Jhomolhari, one of Bhutan’s most revered mountain peaks.
    • Using Amankora as a base for exploration, you can hike from here along Paro’s cliffs to the Tiger’s Nest where a log cabin lunch awaits.
    • Private dining experiences here are second to none, with the forest and dzong as a backdrop you can enjoy intimate table settings around a forest fire pit or barbecues in ceremonial tents.
  • The forested location creates a deep sense of immersion and privacy, but also means some rooms and suites are reached by gently winding paths requiring good mobility
  • Paro’s elevation and valley climate can bring cool mornings and evenings even in summer; layering clothing is recommended for outdoor experiences.
Amankora Paro welcomes families with an understated ease. Suites and interconnecting rooms are available to accommodate multiple generations comfortably. Cultural experiences such as forest walks and gentle yoga sessions have been designed to cater for all ages. Children and teens are naturally drawn to the forest trails, providing endless paths to adventure.
The lodge maintains a strong focus on cultural and environmental stewardship. Ingredients for the restaurant are sourced from local farms and the lodge’s own garden, and guided excursions are designed to connect guests with Bhutanese traditions and daily life in a way that supports local communities. Spa practices and wellness experiences draw on traditional knowledge, ensuring that local heritage continues to be celebrated and preserved.

Amankora Paro is set within a quiet forested enclave above the Paro Valley, approximately one hour from Paro International Airport. The journey itself offers a gentle introduction to Bhutan: winding roads through river valleys, rice paddies and small villages set the rhythm for a stay defined by calm and observation.

Nearby, Drukgyel Dzong and local monasteries are easily accessible for guided visits, while forest trails and the revered Tiger’s Nest monastery lie just beyond the lodge’s gates, providing plenty of opportunities for exploration.

What our travellers say

We went to Sri Lanka as a three-generation family of three. The superb trip was organised by Samanthie and the team and it's difficult to see how it could have been bettered.

Red Dot organised the most wonderful 3-week holiday for us. Samanthie built a trip around the amazing sights we had requested visiting, together with her own suggestions and a wide mix of hotels, which gave us the flavours of both traditional Sri Lanka and the sleek, stylish contemporary version of the country. Our Driver made the whole experience incredibly special for us.

I can’t thank Cherylle and the Red Dot team enough for their meticulous planning of our family holiday to India travelling through Rajasthan over Christmas. As a family of all adults, every suggestion from daily activities to hotel choices was simply perfect. We travelled through Delhi, Ranthambore (an unforgettable tiger safari!), Jaipur and Agra and I truly feel we experienced the very best of each destination while moving at a relaxed, well thought out pace

My partner arranged a holiday trip at fairly short notice to Sri Lanka with Red Dot on a recommendation, Samanthie was so patient & helpful with her suggested itinerary which we followed with some minor amendments. On arrival at Colombo we met Manjula our chauffeur/guide who was absolutely brilliant!

Dulmini and the Red Dot Team arranged a fantastic trip for us around Assam and North East India. Faultless service. I cannot recommend them more highly.

We looked up, and communicated with umpteen tour operators. Though Red Dot seemed to have offices in Sri Lanka and the UK, they seemed to have the best reviews. We were fortunate enough to correspond with Cherylle, who not only assured us of the safety of our friend, but created a personalised, and flexible, itinerary which we could not have done ourselves.

A 14-day tour with Red Dot Tours was the perfect antidote to the bleak UK winter. After a glowing recommendation from a friend, we contacted Red Dot Tours and were not disappointed. Our consultant, Lahiru, curated a seamless itinerary. Throughout the planning phase, Lahiru was incredibly responsive; the final itinerary—delivered via a user-friendly 'Guest Portal'—was impressively detailed, covering every hotel stay and excursion.
