COMO Uma Punakha

Punakha, Bhutan
Banner image image
Perched on a gentle hill at the western end of the Punakha Valley, COMO Uma Punakha commands one of the most beautiful settings in Bhutan, overlooking the Mo Chhu River as it winds through rice terraces, orchards and forested slopes. Eagle’s nest-like in its positioning, the lodge offers a rare combination of sweeping Himalayan views, deep tranquillity and easy access to one of Bhutan’s most historically significant regions.

It is a place where stillness, space and contemporary elegance come together in effortless harmony. The architecture and interiors are understated yet deeply considered, blending clean, contemporary lines with natural materials and subtle references to Bhutanese craftsmanship. Stone, timber and soft, neutral tones create spaces that feel serene and grounded, allowing the surrounding landscape to take centre stage. Rooms and suites are designed as private sanctuaries: expansive windows invite in shifting light, handwoven textiles add warmth and texture and private terraces frame uninterrupted views of the valley and river below. Every detail, from deep soaking bathtubs to bespoke furnishings, feels curated to enhance the connection between indoors and out.

Dining at COMO Uma Punakha is a quietly memorable experience. Menus highlight Bhutanese flavours and seasonal produce, much of it sourced from the lodge’s own gardens, and are served in the light-filled main restaurant or arranged in bespoke private settings. Whether enjoying a relaxed lunch overlooking the valley or an intimate candlelit dinner beneath the stars, the focus remains on simplicity, flavour and a sense of place.

The lodge’s elevated position makes it an exceptional base for exploration. Guests can venture out to Punakha’s ancient dzongs, walk through verdant river valleys, or enjoy guided treks and river rafting along the Mo Chhu. Back at the lodge, the Shambhala wellness centre offers a restorative counterpoint, with holistic treatments, yoga and tranquil spaces for reflection that invite a slower, more mindful pace.

COMO Uma Punakha is a retreat of rare beauty and balance, offering one of Bhutan’s most rewarding combinations of valley views, wellness and active discovery.

What we love

    • The lodge’s elevated vantage point, offering breathtaking, ever-changing views across the Punakha Valley and the Mo Chhu River, from misty mornings to golden, sunlit evenings.
    • The breadth of experiences available, from serene visits to the Sangchhen Dorji Lhuendrup Nunnery and guided valley walks to exhilarating river rafting through one of Bhutan’s most fertile landscapes.
    • Private dining experiences that feel truly special, whether enjoying a multi-course Bhutanese feast on your suite terrace or a candlelit meal beneath the stars, framed by the valley’s dramatic scenery.

The hilltop setting means access to Punakha town requires a short drive or hotel transfer; those seeking walkable access to shops or external restaurants should plan accordingly.

Weather in the Himalayas can be variable, particularly between June and September, and some outdoor activities may be adjusted to ensure the best possible experience.

COMO Uma Punakha welcomes families with spacious suites and connecting rooms. While the atmosphere is calm and restorative, curated experiences such as guided river walks, cultural workshops and nature treks make it easy for children to engage with the region’s landscapes and traditions. Babysitting can be arranged on request.
The lodge is committed to sustainable and responsible tourism. Much of the produce served in its restaurants is grown in the lodge’s own gardens, supporting quality and reducing environmental impact. COMO Uma Punakha also works closely with nearby communities, sourcing additional ingredients from local farmers, supporting cultural preservation initiatives and employing staff from the surrounding region.
Situated in western Punakha, the lodge overlooks the valley and lies a short drive from Punakha Dzong, one of Bhutan’s most iconic monasteries. Paro International Airport is approximately 81 miles (130 km) away, a journey of around three and a half hours by car. Its location provides access to trekking routes, river rafting and village visits, while maintaining a strong sense of mountain tranquillity. Paro and Thimphu are each reachable within a three-hour drive.

What our travellers say

We went to Sri Lanka as a three-generation family of three. The superb trip was organised by Samanthie and the team and it's difficult to see how it could have been bettered.

Red Dot organised the most wonderful 3-week holiday for us. Samanthie built a trip around the amazing sights we had requested visiting, together with her own suggestions and a wide mix of hotels, which gave us the flavours of both traditional Sri Lanka and the sleek, stylish contemporary version of the country. Our Driver made the whole experience incredibly special for us.

I can’t thank Cherylle and the Red Dot team enough for their meticulous planning of our family holiday to India travelling through Rajasthan over Christmas. As a family of all adults, every suggestion from daily activities to hotel choices was simply perfect. We travelled through Delhi, Ranthambore (an unforgettable tiger safari!), Jaipur and Agra and I truly feel we experienced the very best of each destination while moving at a relaxed, well thought out pace

My partner arranged a holiday trip at fairly short notice to Sri Lanka with Red Dot on a recommendation, Samanthie was so patient & helpful with her suggested itinerary which we followed with some minor amendments. On arrival at Colombo we met Manjula our chauffeur/guide who was absolutely brilliant!

Dulmini and the Red Dot Team arranged a fantastic trip for us around Assam and North East India. Faultless service. I cannot recommend them more highly.

Wonderful company. Our holiday in Sri Lanka was perfect. Local knowledge made all the difference

We looked up, and communicated with umpteen tour operators. Though Red Dot seemed to have offices in Sri Lanka and the UK, they seemed to have the best reviews. We were fortunate enough to correspond with Cherylle, who not only assured us of the safety of our friend, but created a personalised, and flexible, itinerary which we could not have done ourselves.

A 14-day tour with Red Dot Tours was the perfect antidote to the bleak UK winter. After a glowing recommendation from a friend, we contacted Red Dot Tours and were not disappointed. Our consultant, Lahiru, curated a seamless itinerary. Throughout the planning phase, Lahiru was incredibly responsive; the final itinerary—delivered via a user-friendly 'Guest Portal'—was impressively detailed, covering every hotel stay and excursion.
