Thimphu, Bhutan's capital city, certainly doesn't feel like a typical capital city and confusingly it's not the home of Bhutan's International Airport either (you'll find this in Paro). Thimphu is small, fairly quiet and full of intricate government buildings, simple monasteries and cultural institutions. Thimphu is discreet, unhurried and incredibly friendly.  Small residential neighbourhoods, subtle markets and small businesses create a capital city that in some areas feels medieval in atmosphere, yet there are signs of a new more modern Bhutan as well. Learning about this juxtapositions are part of what makes it so fascinating.
