PaliGhar

Kalimpong, India
Luxury hotel banner
PaliGhar is a charming and welcoming homestay on a farm near Kalimpong in northern India.

Hosted by a sixth-generation Nepali family, you are welcomed like old friends to unwind in nature whilst learning about very typical rural life in the Himalayas. There are two guest cottages here, designed to mimic the traditional style of local villages whilst minimising their environmental impact, using mud bricks and ‘ekra’ woven bamboo in favour of concrete.

The rooms are spacious and comfortably appointed, with cosy linens, blankets, and ensuite bathrooms with all the amenities you need, and a verandah to the front to relax and soak up the sounds of nature. The organic kitchen garden provides delicious seasonal fruit, herbs and vegetables, with delicious full-course Nepali lunches and dinners tailored to guests’ spice preferences, and breakfasts serving fruit, cereals and eggs from the resident chickens. During your stay, you can enjoy lovely nature walks, the chance to try your hand at farming activities including milking cows and terrace farming techniques, village walks, trekking and visits to a Hindu temple. Overall this is a truly special place which invites you to slow down, forget the pace of modern life and spend time with wonderful people.

What we love

    • A delightful farm stay which invites you to experience life in a rural Himalayan village without compromising on comfort
    • Truly tranquil, this is a real retreat in nature with chickens roaming around, birdlife and beautiful trees and flowers
    • An ideal base for walks, treks and village visits
    • Spend time talking, learning and sharing stories with Kabir and Ahana during your stay – this human connection is one of the highlights for guests
    • Delicious Nepali food using produce from the organic kitchen garden on the farm

Hosted by a family, this is a far more personal experience than staying in a traditional hotel

This is the perfect place to enjoy a digital detox – you won’t find WiFi or TVs here

The resident dog, Brownie is very friendly and a firm favourite with guests

This is a wonderful option for families, and children of all ages love exploring the farm, meeting local children in the village, and learning about farm life here.

Staying at PaliGhar directly supports a remote rural community which otherwise sees little income from tourism. The cottages were built using local craftsmanship and eco-friendly techniques such as mud brick and bamboo in favour of concrete. The family are dedicated to sustainable and seasonal horticulture practices, protecting and preserving the ecosystem and wildlife in the area. This is the epitome of sustainable tourism, getting off the beaten path and connecting with real people and understanding more about daily life. We warmly recommend it.

PaliGhar is located in Ecchey, a 30-minute drive from Kalimpong town in West Bengal. It combines well with Darjeeling and Gangtok which are both around 3 hours’ drive away. The nearest airport is Bagdogra which is a 3 ½ hour drive.

What our travellers say

We went to Sri Lanka as a three-generation family of three. The superb trip was organised by Samanthie and the team and it's difficult to see how it could have been bettered.

Red Dot organised the most wonderful 3-week holiday for us. Samanthie built a trip around the amazing sights we had requested visiting, together with her own suggestions and a wide mix of hotels, which gave us the flavours of both traditional Sri Lanka and the sleek, stylish contemporary version of the country. Our Driver made the whole experience incredibly special for us.

I can’t thank Cherylle and the Red Dot team enough for their meticulous planning of our family holiday to India travelling through Rajasthan over Christmas. As a family of all adults, every suggestion from daily activities to hotel choices was simply perfect. We travelled through Delhi, Ranthambore (an unforgettable tiger safari!), Jaipur and Agra and I truly feel we experienced the very best of each destination while moving at a relaxed, well thought out pace

My partner arranged a holiday trip at fairly short notice to Sri Lanka with Red Dot on a recommendation, Samanthie was so patient & helpful with her suggested itinerary which we followed with some minor amendments. On arrival at Colombo we met Manjula our chauffeur/guide who was absolutely brilliant!

Dulmini and the Red Dot Team arranged a fantastic trip for us around Assam and North East India. Faultless service. I cannot recommend them more highly.

We looked up, and communicated with umpteen tour operators. Though Red Dot seemed to have offices in Sri Lanka and the UK, they seemed to have the best reviews. We were fortunate enough to correspond with Cherylle, who not only assured us of the safety of our friend, but created a personalised, and flexible, itinerary which we could not have done ourselves.

A 14-day tour with Red Dot Tours was the perfect antidote to the bleak UK winter. After a glowing recommendation from a friend, we contacted Red Dot Tours and were not disappointed. Our consultant, Lahiru, curated a seamless itinerary. Throughout the planning phase, Lahiru was incredibly responsive; the final itinerary—delivered via a user-friendly 'Guest Portal'—was impressively detailed, covering every hotel stay and excursion.
