On the banks of the Rapti River with Chitwan National Park stretching out on the opposite shore, Meghauli Serai is Nepal's most polished safari lodge. It brings the full Taj Safaris experience to the country and does so with a level of service and operational quality that is genuinely hard to match.
Its 29 rooms and villas include 16 Rapti Villas with private plunge pools and uninterrupted river views. Well-trained naturalists lead jeep safaris, canoe rides and jungle walks through one of Asia's finest wildlife habitats, with more than 700 species of wildlife and around 600 birds recorded across the park. The main lounge features a chandelier made from 10,000 individually hand-painted Nepalese beads, and the level of service throughout is a step above anything else in Chitwan.
What we love
- We love the 16 Rapti Villas; waking up to the sight of the river and the park beyond from your own private plunge pool is something else entirely
- Over 700 animal species and approximately 600 bird species in the park, guided by naturalists who really know what they are doing
- The chandelier in the main lounge, handcrafted from 10,000 individually painted Nepalese beads, is one of those details that stays with you
- The Taj name carries genuine weight here; the service and the overall standard of operation are notably higher than elsewhere in Chitwan
The standard rooms in the main building are comfortable and well-appointed but noticeably smaller than the villas. For the full Meghauli Serai experience, the Rapti Villas are the right choice
The road from Bharatpur airport to the lodge takes around 90 minutes and the final stretch is unpaved. The transfer is part of the adventure, but it is worth being prepared for it
