Bill Bensley designed Shinta Mani Mustang, and it shows. Perched above the frontier town of Jomsom in a region that was closed to outsiders for centuries, it is one of the most dramatic places to stay in Asia.
Its 29 suites have floor-to-ceiling windows looking out at the Nilgiri range, and the all-inclusive programme covers everything from private guided excursions to unlimited treatments with the resident Tibetan medicine doctor. Two indoor greenhouses supply the kitchen, cocktails are served around outdoor fire pits under a remarkable night sky, and a minimum five-night stay applies.
What we love
- The location alone is reason enough: hidden in one of the world's deepest valleys, in a kingdom that was forbidden to outsiders for centuries
- Everything is included; guides, excursions, wellness treatments, all meals and drinks. There is nothing to think about except the mountains
- We love the resident Tibetan medicine doctor, who offers individual consultations and treatments drawing on centuries of Himalayan healing practice
- Sitting around the fire pits at night, watching the stars appear over the Nilgiri range, is the sort of thing people come back for
Getting here is genuinely complex. Flights run Kathmandu to Pokhara, then on to Jomsom, and weather cancellations are common. We can build flexibility into the itinerary around this property
Jomsom sits at 2,800 metres. Most guests acclimatise within a day or two, but those sensitive to altitude should factor this in when planning
The lodge closes in July and August for the monsoon season. Outside of these months it operates year round
