Patan

Kathmandu Valley, Nepal

Patan, also known as Lalitpur, is one of the Kathmandu Valley’s three ancient royal cities and arguably the oldest, sitting just across the Bagmati River from Kathmandu itself.

It is best known for its Durbar Square, which many find finer than Kathmandu’s, and for the metalwork in bronze, silver and copper for which the city has been celebrated for centuries. The Krishna Mandir, the Royal Baths, the Golden Temple and the Patan Museum all reward proper time, as do the narrow lanes off the main squares where the metalworkers still keep their workshops. We can combine Patan with a half day in Kathmandu, or use it as a quieter base from which to explore the valley as a whole.
