Lumbini

The Terai (Lowlands), Nepal

Lumbini is the birthplace of Siddhartha Gautama, the historical Buddha, and sits in the flat Terai lowlands near the Indian border

It is a place of considerable significance for Buddhists from across the world and has a calm, contemplative atmosphere that is quite different from the rest of Nepal. The sacred garden marks the exact site of the birth, and surrounding it is a zone of monasteries built by Buddhist communities from countries as varied as Japan, Thailand, China and Sri Lanka. It is not somewhere that needs a full day but rewards a considered visit rather than a quick stop, and works well combined with Chitwan on a southern Nepal route.
