Terai

The Terai (Lowlands), Nepal

The Terai is the flat lowland belt that runs along Nepal's southern border with India, and it is a part of the country that many visitors overlook in favour of the mountains.

That is a mistake. This is where Nepal's two best wildlife parks sit: Chitwan and Bardia. It is also where you will find Lumbini, the birthplace of the Buddha. The landscape here is entirely different from the rest of Nepal: wide rivers, subtropical forest, grassland and a culture rooted in the Tharu community who have lived here for centuries. We often recommend building at least a few nights in the Terai into any Nepal itinerary.
