Phaplu

Upper Himalaya, Nepal

Phaplu is a small Sherpa village in the Solukhumbu district of eastern Nepal, sitting at around 2,413 metres on the lower slopes of the Eastern Himalayas about 30 kilometres south of Everest as the crow flies.

It is a quieter, more cultural corner of the Everest region than the busier Lukla trail to the north, with traditional Sherpa villages, ancient monasteries and yak caravans on the trails around the valley. Reached by a 40-minute flight from Kathmandu or a long mountain road by 4x4, it has its own small airport and a slower, more contemplative feel than most of the region. We use Happy House, the Lama family home and one of Nepal’s most distinctive places to stay, as our anchor here, with mountain biking, monasteries and meditation among the things on offer.
