Beaches and Swimming in Sri Lanka
Sri Lanka is an excellent destination for a beach holiday and there’s a wide range of beaches and locations. Sri Lanka’s South Coast is highly appealing for those wanting to surf, enjoy eating out and swimming but please do note, the Indian Ocean along this coast can be a little rough at times and not all beaches are swimmable. Sri Lanka’s East Coast is a softer coastline and places like Passikudah are very swimmable and gentle. This coast is great between May and September. Please see our Sri Lanka Weather Guide for more information.
This depends on a few things such as the time of year you are travelling, and also the atmosphere and type of beach that you like. Generally Sri Lanka’s East Coast is best from May to September, and the South Coast is best from December to April and then July and August. Sri Lanka’s South Coast is more buzzy, with many surf beaches, hotels, and restaurants. In some spots it can feel a little developed, but there are still some really beautiful bays and beaches that have escaped mass tourism and they generally have the most wonderful and relaxed vibe. The feeling changes from beach to beach and if you can swim or not in the sea, as this stretch of the Indian Ocean can get rough. We like Ahangama for food and surfing, Tangalle for relaxing bays and quieter beaches, Mawella for a big cove and nice boutique hotels, Midigama for surfing and private villas. Passikudah and Karpaha on the East Coast feel much gentler, with quiet white stretches of coast and a calmer sea. Passikudah is protected by a reef, so this means the ocean is very safe for swimming. However, it’s not a surf location and you won’t find as many places to eat out.
The sea can be rough in certain spots, particularly on Sri Lanka’s Southern Coast, but this depends on the day and the particular beach and cove. Always take advice on the day. Most of the hotels we offer have a pool for those days the sea isn’t swimmable.
Passikudah has a very good swimmable beach.
If you are looking for food and drink and things to do, Ahangama is a great option. We really like Tekanda Lodge, just 10 minutes in land.
Sri Lanka is excellent for surfing, just let us know if you are interested in a lesson or hire and we can advise you.
