Trip length
We would normally suggest a minimum of 7 days, however if you are combining Sri Lanka with The Maldives, then it’s possible to do a shorter trip to get a taste of what Sri Lanka has to offer. For those short on time we can plan a trip that takes in easy to access areas, to avoid too much travel. Our Sri Lanka specialists can help with this.
Absolutely, because Sri Lanka is fairly small and packs a huge amount in, you can actually see quite a lot in a 7 day period. We would recommend staying for as long as you can and we even have clients that stay for 3 weeks, covering many parts of the island, including Jaffna and the East Coast.
A common trip in Sri Lanka is travelling in a clockwise direction, travelling from Colombo to Sigiriya, down to Kandy, The Hill Country, Yala and the South Coast; normally spending 2 or 3 nights in each place. However, this is a very common route and we would recommend deviating away from this, or doing more unique experiences in each location.
The pace of your trip is up to you. Some people like to pack at lot into a day in Sri Lanka, whereas others like to take it easy, with more relaxing down time. Some of our clients like to have just 2 nights in each place, others like to have 3 or 4 nights. It’s a very personal thing, and because all of our trips are completely bespoke, we can design them around you.
Most journeys vary from 2 hours up to around 5 or 6 and we plan them very carefully and safely. The roads in Sri Lanka have improved significantly in recent years, with much better highways. This has meant that journey times by cars in Sri Lanka have sped up considerably. Also, it’s worth noting that Red Dot’s vehicles are very high quality, spacious, and high up with big windows, so that you can enjoy the views. This makes a huge difference, particularly for children who can get car sick as well. Travelling by car in Sri Lanka are a real joy, but if you are worried we can plan your trip to have shorter journeys. Alternatively there’s Cinnamon Air, who provide light aircraft flights across Sri Lanka. For those with the budget, we can arrange some journeys by helicopter as well, which is very special.
Sri Lanka is a very easy country to travel around with your own personal chauffeur guide and car. This is by far the easiest, safest and most convenient way to get around in comfort. We can also arrange helicopters or light aircraft flights as well, and even train journeys.
Sri Lanka is an excellent place to start if you are new to travelling in Asia. We would argue that Sri Lanka is a softer introduction than India, and has some of the gentle nature of Southeast Asia. Because we offer chauffeur guides that stay with you throughout your trip means you feel completely taken care of from start until finish. Your hands are firmly held throughout a trip to Sri Lanka with Red Dot.
This would mean taking the trip more slowly, staying in each destination a little longer, so that you get to know the country more deeply. It’s the opposite of ticking off all of the boxes.
