Why Sri Lanka
Yes Sri Lanka is definitely worth seeing due to it’s huge variety of things to do and see, from Sigiriya Rock to Yala National Park, and from the tea plantations to the surf beaches of southern Sri Lanka. Sri Lanka arguably has something for everyone.
The sheer variety in activities, the beautiful accommodation, the incredibly friendly locals, the world class wildlife, UNESCO world heritage sites.
Absolutely, it’s a gentle version of India and has a similar feel to some of Southeast Asia. It’s also a direct flight making it a very easy first trip to Asia. Accommodation is very high quality in Sri Lanka, with some incredible places to eat out. Many people speak English and you’ll find a large international expat community as well. It’s a very gentle place to start. It’s also a very good option for families.
Sri Lanka is arguably a lot less touristy and commercial when compared to many part of Bali, with a lot less traffic in the busier beach areas. Sri Lanka has a greater variety of wildlife with leopards, elephants and sloth bear.
Like Thailand, Sri Lanka also feels very welcoming and very gentle. Both destinations offer great variety. The Southcoast of Sri Lanka is arguably a bit more surf orientated than Thailand, and the sea can be a little rough. The East coast of Sri Lanka has a gentle ocean, more similar to Thailand. Both counties have some impressive temples and UNESCO World Heritage Sites. Sri Lanka is arguably a little less developed than Thailand. Sri Lanka arguably has much more varied national parks and wildlife opportunities.
Sri Lanka and The Maldives are completely different. The Maldives is mostly made up of inhabited islands and non-inhabited private island resorts surrounded by clear calm waters and often excellent house reefs and snorkelling opportunities. Resorts are often their own private islands. Sri Lanka is a much bigger island with a much bigger population with a huge range of landscapes, religions, cultures, historical sites, wildlife opportunities. Combining the two is an excellent idea as you get the immersive and historical side of Sri Lanka with all of its variety along with some of the world’s most idyllic beaches and resorts in The Maldives.
