Tucked within the serene expanse of Kumana National Park, Leopard Trails Kumana Camp offers an exclusive gateway to Sri Lanka's untamed eastern wilderness.

The camp's bespoke tents seamlessly blend rustic charm with modern comforts, featuring spacious interiors adorned with plush bedding, dark wood furnishings, and air conditioning to ensure a restful retreat after exhilarating safaris. Each tent boasts a private en-suite bathroom with hot water showers, and some offer outdoor bathing experiences that allow guests to connect intimately with nature.

A private veranda extends the living space outdoors, providing a tranquil spot to observe the surrounding flora and fauna. Beyond the luxurious accommodations, Leopard Trails Kumana immerses guests in the rhythms of the wild. Expert naturalists guide daily game drives, unveiling the park's rich biodiversity, from elusive leopards to vibrant birdlife. Evenings are marked by gourmet dining under the stars, with meals crafted from local ingredients and served in communal settings that foster shared stories and camaraderie. As night falls, the distant calls of wildlife provide a natural lullaby, completing the authentic safari experience that Leopard Trails Kumana Camp so thoughtfully curates.

What we love

    • Venture deep into the heart of Kumana National Park on customised game drives led by seasoned naturalists, where each outing is a chance to track elusive leopards, witness elephants at watering holes, and encounter rare bird species in their natural habitat.
    • Savor gourmet Sri Lankan and international cuisine in an open-air setting illuminated by lanterns and starlight, with the ambient sounds of the jungle providing an unforgettable natural soundtrack to each evening meal.
    • Visit the revered Okanda Murugan Kovil, a vibrant Hindu temple nestled near the camp. This spiritual site marks a stop on the annual Pada Yatra pilgrimage to Kataragama, a glimpse into the rich religious traditions of the island

The culinary provision at the camp is centred around Sri Lankan authentic meals, offering you proper immersion into the culture of the area. Don’t expect diverse, international buffets

The camp’s secluded setting deep within Kumana National Park adds to its charm but can make access challenging, requiring travel on unpaved roads

Children aged 6–11 can share tents with parents for a reduced rate, with those 5 and under staying free. While safaris are generally suited for children aged 8 and above, younger guests can enjoy engaging activities like wildlife footprint games and nature walks around the camp. The camp offers family tents, kid-sized binoculars, and child-friendly meals. Junior ranger programs and storytelling sessions around the campfire are amongst the activities on offer for children.

The Camp operates with sustainability at its heart, utilising solar energy and eco-friendly waste management systems. The tents are designed to blend seamlessly into the environment, minimising disruption to the wildlife and landscape. Waste is carefully recycled, and composting is employed to reduce the camp's environmental impact. Guests are encouraged to engage in responsible tourism, supporting local communities and conservation initiatives. This commitment to sustainability allows for an immersive, yet eco-conscious safari experience.

The international airport in Mattala is the closest to the camp at 60km away. For visitors seeking to make the most of the diverse wildlife experiences here, you could also visit Lunugamvehera National Park, within a day trip from the camp, to see the vast elephant herds, leopards, sloth bears and crocodiles.

What our travellers say

We went to Sri Lanka as a three-generation family of three. The superb trip was organised by Samanthie and the team and it's difficult to see how it could have been bettered.

Red Dot organised the most wonderful 3-week holiday for us. Samanthie built a trip around the amazing sights we had requested visiting, together with her own suggestions and a wide mix of hotels, which gave us the flavours of both traditional Sri Lanka and the sleek, stylish contemporary version of the country. Our Driver made the whole experience incredibly special for us.

I can’t thank Cherylle and the Red Dot team enough for their meticulous planning of our family holiday to India travelling through Rajasthan over Christmas. As a family of all adults, every suggestion from daily activities to hotel choices was simply perfect. We travelled through Delhi, Ranthambore (an unforgettable tiger safari!), Jaipur and Agra and I truly feel we experienced the very best of each destination while moving at a relaxed, well thought out pace

My partner arranged a holiday trip at fairly short notice to Sri Lanka with Red Dot on a recommendation, Samanthie was so patient & helpful with her suggested itinerary which we followed with some minor amendments. On arrival at Colombo we met Manjula our chauffeur/guide who was absolutely brilliant!

Dulmini and the Red Dot Team arranged a fantastic trip for us around Assam and North East India. Faultless service. I cannot recommend them more highly.

We looked up, and communicated with umpteen tour operators. Though Red Dot seemed to have offices in Sri Lanka and the UK, they seemed to have the best reviews. We were fortunate enough to correspond with Cherylle, who not only assured us of the safety of our friend, but created a personalised, and flexible, itinerary which we could not have done ourselves.

A 14-day tour with Red Dot Tours was the perfect antidote to the bleak UK winter. After a glowing recommendation from a friend, we contacted Red Dot Tours and were not disappointed. Our consultant, Lahiru, curated a seamless itinerary. Throughout the planning phase, Lahiru was incredibly responsive; the final itinerary—delivered via a user-friendly 'Guest Portal'—was impressively detailed, covering every hotel stay and excursion.
