Kerala is an inspirational and easy destination for a family adventure in India, you’ll explore mangrove forests rich in birdlife, miles of golden sands, vibrant cultural performances, hillside spice plantations and remote backwaters, infusing your little people with a fresh cultural perspective.

This is our private family holiday to Kerala, ideal for small kids and pre-teens. As well as offering an immersive insight into Kerala’s highlights, this sample itinerary has children in mind, ensuring that everyone remains engaged and enthused throughout.

You’ll be met on arrival by your private driver who’ll take you directly to your hotel in the heart of Fort Cochin, passing colonial-style architecture and bustling street markets along the way. Take some time to relax, tomorrow the adventures begin.
Your day starts with a walking tour of Fort Cochin. From stories about ancient explorers to the skills of Chinese fishermen, your guide’s storytelling will ensure that little ones are kept enthralled. This evening you’ll enjoy a showstopping Kathakali dance performance.

You’ll drive two hours east today, to the foothills of the Western Ghats. After checking in, you’ll have the afternoon to explore the hiking trails through the abundant spice plantations, perfect for learning how each spice grows in the wild.

From avocets to woodpeckers, you’ll spy birds beginning with almost every letter among the deep mangrove forest of the Salim Ali Bird Sanctuary today, before your driver takes you on a local village tour exploring the diverse architecture of the region.

You’ll drive southwest to the Keralan coast today, checking in to your hotel before a sunset cruise among the famed backwaters of Alleppey on a local boat. This evening, you’ll be learning how to prepare Keralan specialities in a cookery session at your hotel.

Today you’re cycling through the traditional villages of Kerala, your guide will introduce your family to the lifestyle of the local people here, explaining everything from their occupations to the designs of their homes and the regional delicacies that they enjoy.

You’ll spend the day drifting along the Keralan backwaters aboard a traditional houseboat. Look out for paddy fields, coconut plantations and bustling village markets, offering glimpses into this unique riverside culture. Anchoring at sunset, you’ll have a night of water-based serenity.

After breakfast onboard your boat, you’ll disembark and head off to explore Alleppey town with a guided heritage walk. From here, you’ll drive northwest for one hour, reaching the coastline of the Arabian Sea and checking into your beachside retreat.

It’s time for some down time: build sandcastles on the beach, cool off in the pool, watch the fishermen hauling in their daily catch along the coast or head off along the narrow roads to explore by bicycle.

Another day to switch off and revel in the blissful beach setting of your hotel. Maybe you’ll decide to take part in some of the hotel’s activities today, from yoga sessions to cooking classes, before flopping in a palm-slung hammock.

You have one final day in Marari, so you may wish to head into the village to buy some souvenir handiworks to celebrate your trip. Mark your final night with a bespoke feast served on the private terrace of your family’s cottage.
You’ll be driven the two hours to the airport this morning in time for your international flight home. Time for some family reminiscing to see how much your little people remember about everything they have seen and learnt during their Keralan adventure.
