Taru Villas Mawella

Mawella, Sri Lanka
Luxury hotel banner
Taru Villas Mawella is a tranquil beach retreat set amidst lush gardens on the serene shores of a secluded bay in the fishing village of Mawella, near Tangalle.

Sitting on one of the most charming beaches on Sri Lanka’s southern coast, this quirky yet light and airy property consists of two distinct areas with several private villas, each offering its own unique atmosphere. The surrounding coves, ideal for swimming and surfing, are particularly inviting from December to April.

The Main House, with four bedrooms, is closest to the beach and boasts stunning ocean views, while the Pool House and Kurumba House each feature two bedrooms, nestled in the gardens for added privacy. With timber roofs, polished cement floors, and spacious verandahs, the interiors effortlessly blend Dutch colonial antiques with contemporary design, creating a welcoming and relaxed environment. Taru Villas Mawella is the perfect spot for families, friends, or couples seeking a peaceful and unpretentious coastal escape.

What we love

    1. This is one of our favourite beaches on the South Coast
    2. The property has a unique charm and lots of space
    3. You can have dinner next door in Halcyon Mawella

The rooms all completely vary, and some of room categories are a little small so make sure you get the right sizes for your family group

It’s right on the coast, and the salty air can make some of the furnishings seem a little tired. We don’t mind this as it’s all part of the coastal charm

There’s not much going on, it’s a quiet beach, but that’s what we love

Suitable for families seeking a quiet beach getaway. Family rooms available including additional beds and crib. Child-friendly menus available and expansive beach and garden areas provide ample space for children to play.

No specific children’s programs, so families may need to plan activities accordingly

Taru Villas focuses on water conservation, waste management, reducing greenhouse gas emissions, environmental protection and community support

Tangalle and Mawella can be reached via the south coast or coming from the hill country via Wellawaya. The journey from Colombo’s international airport will take about 3.5 hours via the Southern highway. Avoid road travel and hop on board a sea plane from Colombo which lands less that 1 km away from the villa.

What our travellers say

We went to Sri Lanka as a three-generation family of three. The superb trip was organised by Samanthie and the team and it's difficult to see how it could have been bettered.

Red Dot organised the most wonderful 3-week holiday for us. Samanthie built a trip around the amazing sights we had requested visiting, together with her own suggestions and a wide mix of hotels, which gave us the flavours of both traditional Sri Lanka and the sleek, stylish contemporary version of the country. Our Driver made the whole experience incredibly special for us.

I can’t thank Cherylle and the Red Dot team enough for their meticulous planning of our family holiday to India travelling through Rajasthan over Christmas. As a family of all adults, every suggestion from daily activities to hotel choices was simply perfect. We travelled through Delhi, Ranthambore (an unforgettable tiger safari!), Jaipur and Agra and I truly feel we experienced the very best of each destination while moving at a relaxed, well thought out pace

My partner arranged a holiday trip at fairly short notice to Sri Lanka with Red Dot on a recommendation, Samanthie was so patient & helpful with her suggested itinerary which we followed with some minor amendments. On arrival at Colombo we met Manjula our chauffeur/guide who was absolutely brilliant!

Dulmini and the Red Dot Team arranged a fantastic trip for us around Assam and North East India. Faultless service. I cannot recommend them more highly.

We looked up, and communicated with umpteen tour operators. Though Red Dot seemed to have offices in Sri Lanka and the UK, they seemed to have the best reviews. We were fortunate enough to correspond with Cherylle, who not only assured us of the safety of our friend, but created a personalised, and flexible, itinerary which we could not have done ourselves.

A 14-day tour with Red Dot Tours was the perfect antidote to the bleak UK winter. After a glowing recommendation from a friend, we contacted Red Dot Tours and were not disappointed. Our consultant, Lahiru, curated a seamless itinerary. Throughout the planning phase, Lahiru was incredibly responsive; the final itinerary—delivered via a user-friendly 'Guest Portal'—was impressively detailed, covering every hotel stay and excursion.
