Villa Rosa

Kandy, Sri Lanka
Luxury hotel banner
Villa Rosa is an enchanting guest house with great views over the Mahaweli River close to the centre of Kandy.

It offers excellent value and is a true taste of Sri Lankan living at its most serene, and has long been one of our favourite properties in Kandy. This charming little property has a subtle colonial flavour, a simple, intelligent ambience and a sense of shabby chic which is viewed with much affection by Red Dot travellers seeking to reconnect with life’s simple pleasures.

More upmarket than a guesthouse, less style-obsessed than some boutique hotels, Villa Rosa tempts you to relax outdoors on its private little patios and take in the soothing sights and sounds of the Mahaweli River below. German owned, it is well-managed by an attentive Sri Lankan team and the result is an atmosphere that is quietly efficient, friendly and private. The views over the wide, brown Mahaweli River are stunning.

What we love

    • Villa Rosa is situated outside of Kandy so it benefits from the most beautiful views
    • It's charming and welcoming; this is the antithesis of a mass market hotel which we love
    • You can easily get a complimentary tuk-tuk into Kandy
    • There's the newer addition of a cooler pool, ideal after a morning exploring Kandy. There's also a small spa
    • Lovely Sri Lankan food; guests are welcomed into the kitchen each day to learn how it's made

It's not in the centre of Kandy, but we find that few of our clients want to be in town and would prefer to enjoy the scenery on the outskirts

It's fairly simple and comfortable with few over the top luxuries, but this is reflected in the cost. We like the down to earth style of Villa Rosa

Families are very welcome but it's better suited to slightly older children.

Villa Rosa sits in the hills to the northeast of Kandy, just 10 minutes from Kandy itself.

What our travellers say

We went to Sri Lanka as a three-generation family of three. The superb trip was organised by Samanthie and the team and it's difficult to see how it could have been bettered.

Red Dot organised the most wonderful 3-week holiday for us. Samanthie built a trip around the amazing sights we had requested visiting, together with her own suggestions and a wide mix of hotels, which gave us the flavours of both traditional Sri Lanka and the sleek, stylish contemporary version of the country. Our Driver made the whole experience incredibly special for us.

I can’t thank Cherylle and the Red Dot team enough for their meticulous planning of our family holiday to India travelling through Rajasthan over Christmas. As a family of all adults, every suggestion from daily activities to hotel choices was simply perfect. We travelled through Delhi, Ranthambore (an unforgettable tiger safari!), Jaipur and Agra and I truly feel we experienced the very best of each destination while moving at a relaxed, well thought out pace

My partner arranged a holiday trip at fairly short notice to Sri Lanka with Red Dot on a recommendation, Samanthie was so patient & helpful with her suggested itinerary which we followed with some minor amendments. On arrival at Colombo we met Manjula our chauffeur/guide who was absolutely brilliant!

Dulmini and the Red Dot Team arranged a fantastic trip for us around Assam and North East India. Faultless service. I cannot recommend them more highly.

We looked up, and communicated with umpteen tour operators. Though Red Dot seemed to have offices in Sri Lanka and the UK, they seemed to have the best reviews. We were fortunate enough to correspond with Cherylle, who not only assured us of the safety of our friend, but created a personalised, and flexible, itinerary which we could not have done ourselves.

A 14-day tour with Red Dot Tours was the perfect antidote to the bleak UK winter. After a glowing recommendation from a friend, we contacted Red Dot Tours and were not disappointed. Our consultant, Lahiru, curated a seamless itinerary. Throughout the planning phase, Lahiru was incredibly responsive; the final itinerary—delivered via a user-friendly 'Guest Portal'—was impressively detailed, covering every hotel stay and excursion.
