The Sri Lanka Travel Specialists
True cinnamon comes from Sri Lanka and has been coveted by travellers from across the world for many centuries. Globally, it is still known as Ceylon cinnamon, and its appeal has led to wonderful stories, wild claims and even wars between competing traders. In recent years, modern science has begun to acknowledge the health benefits of cinnamon that have been long upheld in Ayurvedic practices, and the spice’s sweet aroma continues to enchant people across the world.
Cinnamon grows as a bush. Quills are created by finely peeling the bark, whilst the essential oil is extracted from the leaves by steam distillation. These are age-old techniques which have been improved by modern technology, and now cinnamon production is a completely self-sustaining process.
This activity takes place at a cinnamon estate just inland from Weligama. Begin by exploring the 25-acre estate by tractor, stopping off at the nursery, plantation, peeling hut and oil distillery. This is a working estate and you will have the chance to see – and try your hand at – the various stages of production. You will be guided by the English-speaking estate manager. Finish with hill top refreshments and enjoy the beautiful views. This informative and fun tour lasts about an hour and is enjoyed by children as much as adults. The estate also has its own shop selling high-quality cinnamon products.
