Lahiru Kularatne

Senior Travel Specialist, Colombo Office

Lahiru came to travel by way of the law, having practised as an attorney before joining Red Dot in 2010. Fifteen years on, you would be hard pressed to find anyone, anywhere, with a deeper knowledge of Sri Lanka. She plans Sri Lanka, the Maldives and India, and still gets a thrill from a place she has already visited ten times over.

A quiet wildlife encounter

A turtle at Rekawa

My favourite wildlife moment was turtle watching at Rekawa. There is nothing quite like seeing a wild turtle haul up onto a deserted stretch of beach, lay her eggs and slip back into the ocean in the dark.

It is one of those quiet, unshowy experiences that stays with you long after the showier sightings fade.

What Lahiru brings to your trip

Adventure is where Lahiru is most comfortable — kayaking expeditions and the wilder, off-grid corners — but honeymoons, families, wildlife and safari, and culture and history all run through her work. She has a particular love of small, extraordinary places to stay, the characterful, one-of-a-kind properties that make her trips sing.

Why I love these countries

India is the world in one country, from the snowy Himalayas to Kerala's tropical beaches, Rajasthan's desert villages and the wildlife parks between. And then there is Sri Lanka, which is home. I could have been somewhere ten times and I will still want to go back.

The most remote corner

The most remote place I have been is Delft Island, off the far north, where I stayed for three nights. Getting there is an adventure in itself. What waits is idyllic: wild horses, white sandy beaches and coconut palms, with a deep history and almost no one around.

What sets a Red Dot trip apart

It is the team itself. The consultants live in Sri Lanka and live and breathe travel, so they know the country, hotels and chauffeur guides first-hand. Nothing is pulled from a template, which is why the itineraries feel so personal.

Away from the desk

Outside work I am happiest travelling. When I am home I read anything from Wave to When Breath Becomes Air to Maximum City, and I have a soft spot for obscure foreign films.
