Nawodya Sithumini

Travel Assistant, Colombo Office

On her very first safari, in Wilpattu, Sithumini watched a leopard step quietly out of the scrub. The trackers knew this one by name, Neluma, and for someone who had never seen a leopard in the wild it was the kind of moment that decides what you do with your life. Two years into a travel career, and now part of the Red Dot team, Sithumini still chases that feeling of the island catching you off guard.

The first wild encounter

The leopard that started it all

My travels have stayed close to the coast and the wilder side of the island. I have trekked into the Sinharaja rainforest, where the canopy hides Sri Lanka's endemic birds, stood beneath the cliffside Koneshwaram Kovil at Trincomalee, and had that first leopard sighting in Wilpattu.

The south coast is my happy place: the clear water and easy pace of Mirissa, Unawatuna and Hikkaduwa, the calm of Bentota, and the long, wild sweep of Arugam Bay.

“The world isn't just a map of places to visit. It is a collection of stories waiting to be understood.”

What Sithumini brings to your trip

Her interests run to culture and history, religion, and a healthy dose of adventure, which suits a country with this much to climb, walk and explore. Sithumini is early in her career and learning fast, with a real eye for the kind of detail that turns a sightseeing list into a proper trip.

The most remote corner

The most remote place I have been is the hill country around Hatton. What stayed with me was the quiet, the cool air, and the view from Castlereigh Reservoir across the mountains and tea estates, all misty hills and deep green as far as you can see.

What sets a Red Dot trip apart

Red Dot is where I found my feet in travel. I have learned the craft inside a team that lives in Sri Lanka and knows the hotels and suppliers in person, working hand in hand with the chauffeur guides and local hosts on the ground.

Away from the desk

Outside work I love getting out to explore more of Sri Lanka whenever I can. Closer to home I am usually in the garden tending my roses, or indoors with a good book or a film.
