Places to see
Gangtey
Protected as a conservation area, the valley is best known as the winter home of the black-necked crane, which migrates here each year. Overlooking the valley floor, Gangtey Monastery, is our opinion a highlight of Bhutan as it offers something so deeply authentic, playing a central role in spiritual life, education and seasonal rituals for the local community.
Gangtey is also a fantastic location for walking and hiking, and suits those interested in nature. Walking routes trace valley and we can organise a two hour hike, passing farmhouses, rhododendrons, grazing yaks, small settlements, woodland, grazing land and protected wetlands. If you are incredibly lucky, there is the chance to see red panda, Tibetan fox and even Himalayan Black Bear (although this is very rare).
Gangtey offers a quieter perspective on Bhutan and something both stunning visually but also an area that offers a deep insight into Bhutanese culture. Gangtey remains one of our most rewarding inclusions in any of our tailor-made journeys through Bhutan and despite adding additional journey times, if you have the time, we'd strongly recommend a stop here. There's also the benefit of some beautiful places to stay.
