Prayagraj
Prayagraj sits where the Ganges and Yamuna meet, joined, tradition holds, by the unseen Saraswati.
Pilgrims have bathed at this confluence for centuries, and once every twelve years the city hosts the Kumbh Mela, one of the largest gatherings on earth. Akbar built the riverside fort in 1583 and renamed the city Allahabad; it reverted to Prayagraj in 2018. Nearby, Anand Bhavan, the Nehru family home, ties the city to India's independence movement. Outside festival season, Prayagraj is quieter: boat rides at dawn, old colonial streets in Civil Lines, and centuries of religious and political history layered along the same riverbank.
