Bhaktapur is the best preserved of the Kathmandu Valley's ancient cities and the one that feels most like it belongs to its own inhabitants rather than to visitors.
The medieval streets, wood-carved temples and pottery squares have a lived-in quality that is increasingly rare. It was hit by the 2015 earthquake but has been carefully restored in many parts, and the craftsmanship on display is remarkable.
