Mustang

Upper Himalaya, Nepal

Mustang is the high-altitude, trans-Himalayan region of north-central Nepal, lying in the rain shadow of the Annapurna and Dhaulagiri ranges.

The landscape here is entirely unlike anywhere else in the country: arid, wind-scoured and dramatic, with ochre and red cliffs, ancient monasteries and Tibetan Buddhist villages that feel closer to the plateau than to the green valleys below. Lower Mustang, with the frontier town of Jomsom as its hub at around 2,800 metres, is reached by a short flight from Pokhara and is the gateway to the wider region; Upper Mustang beyond, the former Kingdom of Lo, was closed to outsiders until 1992 and still requires a restricted-area permit. The Kali Gandaki river runs through it all, having carved one of the deepest gorges in the world between the two 8,000-metre peaks of Annapurna and Dhaulagiri. We use Shinta Mani Mustang in Jomsom as the anchor for trips into the region, and can build itineraries that combine monasteries, dramatic landscapes and the option of trekking further north for those with the time.
