Madulkelle Eco Lodge

Introduction

Madulkelle Tea and Eco Lodge is a novel accommodation concept to the north of Kandy. The retreat is comprised of comfortable tented lodges, perched on a cliff looking out over the valley below and the spectacular Knuckles Mountain Range, and a main building, the Estate Bungalow, where the reception, restaurant, lounge and swimming pool is located. Surrounded by lush green tea hills, this is a picturesque setting and a haven for birdlife. Madulkelle Tea and Eco Lodge follows strict eco-friendly policies and also does much to benefit the surrounding village community. The climate in Madulkelle is somewhat similar to that of the highlands where it gets cooler in the evenings.

Accommodation

Accommodation is in 19 tented lodges set amidst the tea plantation with sweeping views of the valley below and the surrounding mountains. Named after the birds that can be spotted in the area, each of the tented lodges is 350 sq. ft. in size and has a door and window flaps fixed with mosquito netting. These sturdy canvas tents are imported from South Africa. Interiors are designed with timber flooring and consist of a sleeping area which opens out to a private balcony and an ensuite bathroom with h/w shower, wash basin, and w/c. The lodges are furnished with comfortable twin or double beds and writing desk. Up to three guests can be accommodated in each tented lodge. The tents are categorized into 16 Deluxe lodges, 2 Family lodges and one Honeymoon Suite. The family lodge can accommodate up to four, two adults and two kids and are located on two separate levels. The Honeymoon Suite has the added facility of a TV, minibar, private plunge pool and free Wi-Fi.

Facilities

All public facilities including the reception, restaurant and lounge are housed at the Estate Bungalow, a short stroll away from the lodges. The lounge is fitted with a fireplace and a chess and billiards board. There is also a library, bar, satellite TV, swimming pool and internet facility in the lounge. Sri Lankan and western cuisine is served at the restaurant, prepared with fresh herbs and vegetables from their own organic vegetable gardens. Guests are welcome to pick their own vegetables and join the chef in the kitchen to cook traditional Sri Lankan dishes. Yoga and wellness is also available.
