Colombo’s vibrant arts scene will delight travellers seeking a creative escape, whether it’s touring round the art galleries in search of abstract artwork, exploring shops selling traditional crafts, or simply listening to some great live music whilst enjoying a chilled drink. In recent years the arts scene in Colombo has boomed: several art galleries have opened, showcasing work by some of Sri Lanka’s most celebrated artists; there has been an increase in gigs, shows and the use of live music in bars and restaurants, and fantastic annual events have been launched, such as the multidisciplinary contemporary arts festivals Cinnamon Colomboscope and the Colombo Art Biennale, and Kalapola, a lively street fair that promotes artists from all over the country.
If you are interested in perusing some artwork, there are several great art galleries in Colombo – particular highlights are Paradise Road, which offers monthly exhibitions of contemporary artists from Sri Lanka and South Asia, and the Saskia Fernando Gallery, the largest art gallery in the country which showcases local abstract artwork. Traditional and contemporary crafts make excellent souvenirs or gifts and can be purchased from a variety of shops including Barefoot, Elephant Walk, ODEL and Paradise Road. Plays and musicals are also on offer at a range of venues such as the Lionel Wendt art centre and the Nellum Pokuna theatre.
