Removed from the typical tourist trail, the north-west coast is relatively quiet compared to some of the beaches of the south and offers many opportunities for water-sports. Windsurfing on the island was first started in Negombo, a lively beach town approximately an hour from Colombo which is home to inland lagoons and lakes, ideal for beginners looking to give this invigorating sport a try. Kalpitiya, further north along the coastline, is one of the best spots for kite-surfing in Sri Lanka.
Kalpitiya and Negombo are also excellent places for scuba diving in Sri Lanka. Negombo has two separate dive sites, whilst the Bar Reef in Kalpitiya is riddled with alluring nooks and crevices. At both of these sites you can spot many types of fish, as well as marine turtles, Moray Eels and sting rays.
Another way to make the most of being right on the beach is to go on a dolphin watching excursion. Head out in the early morning in search of these fun-loving creatures and watch pods of Spinner Dolphin leaping and spiralling through the air. Also keep your eyes peeled for Dugong, sting rays and sea turtles.
If its wildlife that you are interested in, do not miss out on visiting Wilpattu National Park, one of the largest, oldest and most visually spectacular national parks in Sri Lanka. With a diverse variety of habitats, many creatures can be seen here, including Sri Lanka’s big game such as elephants, Sloth Bear and the ever-elusive leopard, as well as numerous species of bird.
Other experiences available for those who like to stay active include a walking tour of Negombo and a bicycle ride alongside the extensive canal network in this region, which was put in place by the Dutch in the 17th century. Explore more opportunities for ‘Sport and Adventure in Sri Lanka’.
