Best of Nepal

Nepal
14 days (13 nights)
Walk medieval Kathmandu, trek the Gurung trails of the Annapurna foothills and finish with wildlife safaris in the lowland forests of Chitwan National Park.

In this private tailor-made tour of Nepal, you'll cover the full sweep of what this country does best: three days of cultural immersion in Kathmandu, five days of guided trekking through rice terraces, Gurung villages and honey-hunter cliffs, a stay at a celebrated mountain lodge above Pokhara, and two days of jungle safari in one of Asia's finest wildlife reserves.

This is the most complete Nepal experience we offer, combining the mountains and the jungle, the ancient and the wild, with some of the country's most distinctive places to stay throughout. Inspired? Tell us what you most want to see or do, and we'll design a bespoke tour of Nepal built around your own interests and our expertise.

You'll be met on arrival and transferred to Dwarika's Hotel, where carved timber courtyards and centuries of Nepali craftsmanship make for a wonderful introduction to the city. Every brick is handmade, every piece of carved woodwork an original salvaged from Kathmandu's ancient buildings, and the rooms range from private courtyard suites to chambers with 16th-century windows and hand-printed Buddhist fabrics. The rest of the day is yours to settle in and explore at your own pace.

Today you'll start at Durbar Square, where the Teleju Temple anchors the square with quiet authority, before heading to Hanuman Dhoka, where a statue of the monkey god Hanuman stands draped in red cloth. Nearby, the House of the Living Goddess offers the chance to glimpse the Kumari at one of the upper windows. The morning ends at Swayambhunath, the hilltop stupa with its painted eyes of the Buddha gazing out across the valley.

This afternoon you'll head to Patan, long renowned for its metalwork in bronze, silver and copper. The Durbar Square, Krishna Mandir, the Royal Baths, the Golden Temple and the Patan Museum are all worth your time.

This morning begins at Pashupatinath, one of the holiest Hindu temples in Asia, where the banks of the Bagmati River draw pilgrims, mourners and wandering sadhus from across Nepal and India. The view from the opposite bank is striking: life and death conducted here with a remarkable openness. Next is Boudhanath, the spiritual heart of Kathmandu's Tibetan community, ringed by monasteries and busy with the turning of prayer wheels.

This afternoon takes you to Bhaktapur, the City of Devotees, a medieval town of cobbled lanes that feels relatively untouched. Today you'll visit the Lion Gate, the Golden Gate and the Palace of Fifty-Five Windows. This is the kind of place that is easy to linger in, and one of the great advantages of a private tour of Nepal is having the time to do exactly that.

This morning a short flight to Pokhara delivers you into an entirely different Nepal. On arrival our trekking team will meet you before transferring by road to the trailhead. Today's walk (trekking time approximately 2-3 hours) begins along a ridgeline in the lower Annapurna foothills, with views of the Pokhara Valley below, before descending to the Modi River Valley. Birethanti Lodge sits on the riverbank with a fine outlook over the sacred, unclimbed peak of Machhapuchhre, or Fishtail Mountain. A hot lunch is waiting on arrival, and the rest of the afternoon is yours.
After breakfast, today's trail (trekking time approximately 5-6 hours) follows the Modi Khola upstream through scattered farmland and rice terraces, with Machhapuchhre ahead on the skyline. As the path climbs through forest, the Annapurna massif comes into full view above Ghandruk. A hot lunch is ready at the lodge on arrival.
After breakfast, today's trail (trekking time approximately 4-5 hours) drops steeply from Ghandruk to the Modi River, crossing by suspension bridge before climbing up through Landruk village. Along the way, cliff faces mark the territory of the local honey hunters, who still scale ropes to reach wild bee colonies in the rock above. Lunch is ready on arrival, and the afternoon can be spent resting or exploring the village with your guide.
Today is a steadier day on the trail (trekking time approximately 4-5 hours), passing through village farmland and open countryside with the Annapurnas receding behind you. After arriving at Majhgaon/Tomijong, the afternoon is free for a relaxed spell in the lodge garden or a short stroll into the village with your guide.
Today the trail (trekking time approximately 4-5 hours) passes through Patlekhet and the small village of Pothana, where Tibetan traders have long sold handicrafts to passing trekkers. After arriving at Dhampus, the full Annapurna range comes into view in one wide sweep. A hot lunch is served on arrival, with the rest of the afternoon free for a walk into Dhampus village.
This morning the trail follows the ridge down through wooded hillside and terraced farmland to the valley floor at Phedi, where a vehicle transfers you to Tiger Mountain Pokhara Lodge. Tiger Mountain sits on a hilltop ridge half an hour from Pokhara, a thousand feet above the valley, with views of Machhapuchhre and three of the world's 8,000m peaks: Dhaulagiri, Annapurna and Manaslu. With just nineteen rooms in hand-cut stone bungalows, it is an intimate retreat, with private verandas, Tibetan hand-knotted carpets and original watercolours by British artist Luke Piper. The main lodge building centres on a Nepali-style courtyard with a fireplace and open terraces for meals outside. Colonel Jimmy's Library, a collection of Himalayan mountaineering literature assembled by the late Colonel J.O.M. Roberts, the father of trekking in Nepal, is worth an hour of anyone's time.
Today is yours to use as you please. Guided walks with expert local naturalists explore the surrounding landscape, villages and birdlife. Yoga and shiatsu massage are available for those who want them, and the lodge has a secluded swimming pool and no shortage of well-placed spots to sit quietly with the mountains.
After breakfast this morning, you'll transfer to the airport for the short flight to Bharatpur, gateway to Chitwan National Park. Tiger Tops Tharu Lodge will meet you on arrival and transfer you to the lodge. After a welcome lunch in the garden, the afternoon brings a gentle guided walk to the Narayani River to watch the resident elephants bathe at dusk.

Today begins with a river safari on the Narayani, drifting in a traditional boat through the riverine forest in search of Gharial and Mugger crocodiles and birdlife. After lunch, the afternoon is spent on a jeep safari into Chitwan National Park in search of the one-horned rhinoceros, deer, monkeys and, if fortune allows, the Royal Bengal Tiger.

Please note: the Chitwan programme is a suggested itinerary and subject to change depending on season and conditions.

After breakfast this morning, you'll transfer to Bharatpur airport for the short flight back to Kathmandu. The afternoon is yours to explore, revisit or shop at your own pace. This evening, a farewell dinner at a traditional Nepali restaurant, with a cultural performance, brings the trip to a fitting close.
Today you'll transfer to Kathmandu airport for your onward flight home.

What our travellers say

If Red Dot ever ceased to exist and I wanted to return to Sri Lanka I would probably go somewhere else instead. They were, in every way shape and form, impeccable. From Samanthie who created the itinerary to Wicky who drove us here, there and everywhere I cannot imagine anybody doing it better. Impeccable. I need say no more except it doesn’t get any better.

We chose this company as we wanted our money to benefit the people of Sri Lanka rather than international companies. Their work supports smaller businesses, projects and communities as well as the environment

Our 11th visit to this magical Island with always something new to discover and see. This time we made it up north to Jaffna, via Mannar Island, after beginning in the tea country and acclimatising to the heat, after leaving a very cold UK in January. We had total confidence that RedDot would organise everything to perfection, having used them many times before

We had a fantastic holiday. The itinerary and choice of hotels was spot on, and seamlessly organised.

Exceptional tour of Sri Lanka with Dami. We cannot recommend Dami at Red dot tours highly enough. As our guide over 9 days he made sure that our trip to Sri Lanka was unforgettable- always going above & beyond to impart his knowledge, show us things off the beaten track, looking after us, getting us to try many local delicacies & making us laugh .. a LOT. Cannot imagine anyone doing a better job- if we could take him with us on every holiday we would!

Dulmini did a great job listening to our wishes and arranged an itinerary that was very busy but met all our needs. Sisira, our guide, was outstanding, providing us with great local knowledge and suggesting other activities on our travels. He was a great driver on the busy Sri Lankan roads, was always punctual but above all added colour to the whole trip.

I cannot recommend Red Dot Tours more highly. Thank you so much to Samanthie for her patience with me and all her hard work at putting together the perfect itinerary for my family. I had done a lot of research before I contacted Red Dot and Samanthie created a tour that fitted in all the activities we wanted to do and secured the hotels I told her we would like to stay in (not easy to do in high season).

Wow what can I say, from start to finish we have had a wonderful holiday with Red Dot Tours. Dulmini was so helpful in putting an itinerary together for us as a family of 6 and catering to all of our needs. We have ticked off so many of Sri Lanka’s beautiful sights during our trip. Dulmini and Dhanu were a great help to us while we were out on our travels too.

We spent 13 days on a Bawa tour with wonderful driver and guide Manjula, including Kandalama Heritance, The Kandy House, The Last House, Jetwing Yala, Jetwing Lighthouse and Club Villa hotels. We are 3 friends, one of them in the wheelchair. Dulmini Ekanayake from Red Dot Tours was very helpful and very patient and found solutions to all our special demands.

The itinerary was absolutely perfect and the hotels wonderful, especially Thotalagala, The Warden’s House and 41 Lighthouse Street. Our driver, Indika, was a delight-charming, knowledgeable, considerate and always punctual; he showed us more of this amazing country than we could have hoped for!

Wanted to take a moment to thank RedDot Tours, and specifically Jayandi for helping book a wonderful family vacation for my family and I. First time for my family and Jayandi took care of every detail, was so courteous and professional, and genuinely cared about our experience in SL. I would also like to mention Pradeep, our kind and understanding guide/chauffeur who took such good care of us while we were out and about. I cannot recommend RedDot enough!

We used Red Dot for the first time for our holiday in Sri Lanka. Dulmini put together such a wonderful experience for us, creating an itinerary she drew up after many discussions about what we like and also gave us suggestions for excursions and activities. It was totally bespoke and we were able to make changes throughout this process.

This is an excellent tour company. They planned our Sri Lankan holiday from start to finish. The trip was initially planned for 2022 but due to Covid and other issues we didn’t manage to undertake the trip until this year. Throughout all this time we had the same travel advisor Lahiru who responded quickly to my emails and rearranged and adjusted our holiday each year!

As a group of 8 we have had the most fabulous tour of Sri Lanka organised by Dulmini from RedDot who totally understood my brief of "some" culture, agriculture, nature, trekking and relaxation. The hotels chosen were a wonderful mixture of homestay, tented and pure luxury (Ceylon Tea Trails). The experiences to local villages, trekking the Pekoe Trail and climbing Pidurangala were memorable and our wonderful guide, Ananda, was so informative and knowledgeable and adapted to our needs admirable (not easy with a group of 8)
