Sri Lanka
Our luxury trips to Sri Lanka are highly personalised. Trek the Pekoe plantations trail or soar above the sea for a bird's-eye view of blue whales. Sri Lanka offers a world of unforgettable experiences in one, unique place. Our tailor-made tours to Sri Lanka uncover hidden corners and bring the island to life. Why we love Sri Lanka
Wild things roam free: There are over 500 protected areas dedicated to conservation in Sri Lanka, from Gal Oya National Park in the remote east to Wilpattu in the northwest and from Yala National Park in the south to Siharaja Rainforest. Whether you trek through the rainforests or embark on a safari, there’s unique wildlife to be found from leopards, sloth bears, Asian elephants, and our national bird, the Sri Lanka Jungle Fowl, to name a few. As part of our tailor-made trips, our specialists can make honest recommendations to get you to the right wildlife destinations across the island.
Fallen kingdoms: Cave temples, rock fortresses and sacred statues are just some of the iconic symbols of Sri Lanka’s ancient cities, many of which now hold UNESCO World Heritage status, such as Sigiriya and Anuradhapura. As part of your private journey to Sri Lanka, explore the storied walls of Galle Fort by tuk-tuk, where architectural heritage meets contemporary design.
The epic surf: Surfing is huge in Sri Lanka and even if you don't surf yourself, the relaxed pace on the South Coast is not to be missed. This is also perfect for teenagers.
Creativity at your fingertips: Our trips can mean joining local artisans to carve a folklore mask, expressing yourself through batik dyeing, or learning the art of kandyan drumming with a local musician. We’re proud of our traditional craftsmanship and can’t wait to share our skills with you, if you’re game!
Sri Lanka is best explored by car with your own chauffeur-guide; this someone who's not just an excellent driver, but your personal expert on everything from hidden temples to the best roadside hoppers.Discover moreThe roads here have real character (think tuk-tuks darting about, the occasional buffalo taking its time and even elephants), and having a knowledgeable and highly professional local behind the wheel means you can relax completely and soak it all in. For a change of pace, we can weave in the occasionally spectacular train journey through the tea country or a tuk-tuk ride through bustling markets, but your chauffeur-guide remains your constant companion, speaking fluent English, knowing every backroad and shortcut, and handling all the logistics. It's the difference between navigating Sri Lanka and truly experiencing it.
Places to visit
Colombo & Negombo
Colombo and Negombo capture two very different sides of Sri Lanka’s west coast. In Colombo, British, Dutch and Portuguese architecture sit side by side with vibrant and photogenic markets (such as Pettah Market) and centuries-old Buddhist and Hindu temples. This is a diverse city and one of striking contrasts; on one side you have Galle Face Green with its tranquil promenade, and elsewhere you'll find intricate mosques tucked in between historic buildings. Luxury hotels, chic boutiques, and world-class restaurants have in recent years helped reshape the capital into a more forward thinking and cosmopolitan centre. However, Colombo has still maintained its charm; colourful tuk-tuks weave in and out of traffic and speed past Victorian architecture, Dutch churches, and British-built institution, some of which have been turned into stylish galleries, boutique stays, and rooftop bars. Just north of Colombo, Negombo offers golden beaches and a slower pace of life, with local fish markets and Dutch canals. Negombo, for some, provides a good place to start or end a tailor-made journey to Sri Lanka as its close proximity to Sri Lanka's international airport.
Cultural Triangle / Ancient Cities
Sri Lanka’s Cultural Triangle is the islands' ancient heart and is home to an extraordinary collection of UNESCO World Heritage Sites. The triangle stretches from Anuradhapura to Polonnaruwa and Kandy, and within this region there are many timeless monuments that reveal more than 2,000 years of history. Even by global standards, this region is mesmerising, so time here is best spent with our knowledgable and engaging guides and local hosts. Sigiriya, the iconic rock fortress, is one of Sri Lanka's most impressive ancient cities; it rises above the jungle and as you walk up you are met with original frescoes, water gardens, and sweeping views. Polonnaruwa’s royal ruins and colossal stone Buddhas reflect a golden age of the kings and Dambulla’s cave temples, one of our favourite stops, glow with gilded statues and frescoed ceilings. Anuradhapura’s and Mihintale's sacred Bo tree, grown from the tree under which Buddha found enlightenment, continues to draw pilgrims today.
East Coast
Sri Lanka’s East Coast enjoys its high season between May and September, making this region an excellent option in the summer holidays. The coastline here generally feels very different from Sri Lanka's south coast, which is arguably busier and more rugged. In areas such as Kalkudah and Passikudah you'll find much calmer water, lighter sand and easier to swim in ocean, which means this stretch of coastline is great for families. You won't find the range of restaurants, surf cafes, and hotels in Passikudah that you will on the southern coast, but the benefits are the summer climate and the calm ocean.
Gal Oya National Park, Kumana & Arugam Bay
On Sri Lanka’s wilder eastern frontier, Gal Oya National Park, Kumana National Park, and Arugam Bay blend untouched natural beauty with wilder beaches. Delving into this region provides a deeper perspective of Sri Lanka and something more authentic and unspoiled. We are huge fans of Gal Oya National Park, which is the only place in the country where boat safaris reveal elephants swimming between islands on the vast Senanayake Samudraya reservoir. Here you'll also find the most amazing hiking, nature walks, cycling and even indigenous tribal people, known as the vedda community. Nearby, Kumana's wetlands and forests transform into a birdwatcher’s paradise during migration, with pelicans, painted storks, and rare black-necked storks filling the skies, along with elephants and even leopards. Nearby on the coastline, Arugam Bay offers world-class surfing. Let us know if you would like to include this wilder region into your private tailor-made itinerary with Red Dot.
Galle
Galle is one of Asia's most impressive colonial era towns, and within the walls of UNESCO protected Galle Fort, ancient Dutch and Portuguese buildings how house some of the islands most sophisticated boutique hotels, art galleries, and stylish cafés. Antique shops, restaurants and private villas bring new life to former spice warehouses and peeling merchant homes and tucked in between you'll find local people sitting outside of their well looked after houses, tiny Buddhist temples, small mosques and street food vendors. Galle offers an unforgettable mix of culture, architecture, and coastal beauty but don't do it alone, it's definitely best explored with true and deep local insight.
Jaffna & the North
Jaffna and Sri Lanka’s northern peninsula reveal the island’s vibrant Tamil culture, where colourful Hindu temples, fiery curries, and bustling markets create an atmosphere unlike anywhere else in the country. From the Chundikuli market’s unique produce to palmyra palm delicacies like toddy and jaggery, daily life reflects centuries of tradition. Festivals bring ancient temples alive with music, kavadi processions, and dazzling rituals, while the flat peninsula stretches toward Point Pedro’s traditional fishing villages and unspoiled beaches. Offering authenticity, resilience, and cultural richness, Jaffna and the North feel closer to India than the south, making this region a fascinating journey into Sri Lanka’s living heritage.
Kandy & Hill Country
Kandy and the surrounding and more southerly hill country combine temples and markets with the most breathtaking mountain scenery, often carpeted and covered in tea plantations. It's in Kandy where the sacred Temple of the Tooth crowns the last royal capital and where tranquil lake views, Peradeniya’s botanical gardens, and traditional Kandyan dance preserve centuries of heritage. Beyond the city and further south you'll find the tea country, where the Pekoe Trail offers the most immersive treks through verdant plantations, cascading waterfalls, and colonial era hill stations like Nuwara Eliya and Hatton.
Ella’s dramatic viewpoints and the iconic Nine Arch Bridge showcase some the island’s most spectacular landscapes, though the area can get busy in high season. It's Haputale and Thotalagala that often has our heart; this high altitude area offers the most discreet and traditional tea pickers villages and views from Lipton's Seat are like no other. Sri Lanka's hill country and tea growing region (otherwise known as the Central Highlands) is, in many ways, central to Sri Lanka.
North West Coast & Wilpattu National Park
Sri Lanka’s North West Coast and Wilpattu National Park offer a perfect blend of tranquility and adventure, where golden beaches meet the island’s largest wilderness. Along the quiet shoreline, traditional fishing villages and untouched turtle nesting sites preserve feel fairly untouched, while Wilpattu’s vast scrubland, woodland and shimmering villus (natural lakes) provide sanctuary to leopards, sloth bears, spotted deer, and over 230 bird species. With private safaris led by expert trackers, as part of your private tour, you can enjoy intimate wildlife encounters before continuing on with your trip.
Sinharaja & Kitulgala
Sinharaja and Kitulgala showcase Sri Lanka’s wild heart, where ancient rainforest and rushing rivers create unforgettable adventures. In Sinharaja, misty canopies echo with the calls of endemic birds like the Sri Lanka blue magpie and red-faced malkoha, while rare purple-faced langurs swing through towering trees draped in vines and epiphytes. Guided rainforest walks reveal medicinal plants and extraordinary insects, offering a living classroom of biodiversity. Nearby in Kitulgala, the Kelani River surges through pristine jungle and traditional villages, making it Sri Lanka’s premier spot for white-water rafting, canyoning, and family-friendly outdoor thrills.
South Coast & Yala National Park
Sri Lanka’s South Coast and Yala National Park promise a rare blend of golden beaches, cultural charm, and unforgettable wildlife encounters. Along the coast, boutique hotels and fishing villages set the scene for iconic stilt fishermen, vibrant sunsets, and whale watching in Mirissa where blue and sperm whales breach offshore. Inland, paddy fields and villages remain untouched, perfect for cycling and exploration, while Tangalle’s fish markets and outrigger boats showcase timeless traditions. Further east, Yala National Park unveils one of the world’s highest leopard densities, alongside elephants, sloth bears, and over 200 bird species, with eco-lodges and private game drives offering immersive safari adventures.
West Coast
Sri Lanka’s West Coast is a vibrant mix of palm-fringed beaches, boutique hotels, and luxury resorts, where ayurvedic spas, fine dining, and exhilarating water sports set the stage for unforgettable holidays. From Bentota’s river safaris through mangrove forests and turtle hatcheries protecting endangered species, to iconic Geoffrey Bawa masterpieces like Lunuganga and The Lighthouse Hotel, the coast blends modern luxury with timeless traditions. Fishing villages and toddy tappers preserve their age-old rhythms, while nearby Galle Fort and inland temples make the West Coast the perfect base for beach relaxation and cultural discovery.
