Reframing Jaipur for Children

Jaipur is a sensorial feast, leaving an indelible impression in hearts and minds whatever age you are. If you’re travelling as a family, it’s a city that’s well set up for exploring with younger children, full of first-time experiences that will plant the seed for immersive travel and make memories full of vibrant colour, taste and sound.

At Red Dot, we understand that children engage best through moving around, making things and meeting people, so in this guide we are sharing some ideas for child-friendly experiences in Rajasthan that offer a gentle approach, with shorter days of immersive activities, allowing space for curiosity and interaction. It should give you an idea of what a day of exploring Jaipur with young children the Red Dot way could look like.

Seeing the Pink City at Street Level

Young children wake up early, the perfect excuse to get out and explore the city, making the most of the early morning calm before its streets fill. We know that dragging little ones on a mission to tick off sights is a recipe for a lot of moaning and disengagement but sit them alongside you on a guided Jaipur tuk-tuk ride and the world that weaves past is yours to explore with them, giving you both a child’s-eye view of the sounds, smells and colours of this fascinating city.

The Pink City Rickshaw Company is an ideal partner on this stage of your trip. Not only does its pioneering business model ensure you’re investing in responsible travel projects, but its all-female drivers act as insightful local guides, explaining in illuminating detail the significance of all you experience, from the steaming stalls of chai walas to the women quietly sorting overspilling sacks of flower heads and the bells that ring out from temples across the city.

You’ll find you get an intimate, unhurried and immersive view of Jaipur as it slowly wakes, without the overstimulated meltdowns from your littlest explorers. The bespoke tour is yours to tweak, perhaps stopping to saunter through bazaars, share a cub of streetside chai with your guide or visit a local temple for morning ceremonies before inhaling the heady scent of the morning flower market.

Colour, Crafts and Hands-on Discovery

Jaipur’s wholesale flower market, Phool Mandi, is an absolute feast for the eyes. Everywhere you look vast white and hessian sacks spill open, bursting with the brightest of blooms. The smell is intoxicating and the chatter of bartering enduringly fascinating. Your guide will walk you around the market explaining how it works but it’s busy and, for little people, this can all be a bit overwhelming so before things become too much, we’ll steer you straight into one of the stalls.

Here, you and your children can sit with the women weaving garlands. Learn about the techniques used and the destinations of the garlands themselves, before having your own turn at weaving the flower heads onto looped lines of string. This quiet, rhythmic process slows time and calms the senses enabling you to focus on the smell and colour while quietly viewing the bustling market from the comparative serenity of the stall. It’s a wonderful chance for children to gain hands-on experience of the market, imbedding the memories of the scent and touch of the delicate petals while making their own keepsake.

From the kaleidoscopic energy of the market to the sophisticated calm of a haveli. Your next stop gives you the chance to delve into the rich history of fabric printing with a private, child-friendly block printing workshop, allowing you and your children the chance to experiment with the ancient techniques and traditions. You’ll be guided through the process by your host, who has spent many years working at the forefront of the industry with artisanal printers. Sitting in the shaded gardens of the haveli, you’ll have the chance to quietly design and print your own creations, ready to take home.

A Little Pause

For little people, that’s a busy morning, no matter how adventurous you are. So, we’d suggest heading back to the hotel mid-morning. The perfect time for a rest, some splashing around in the hotel pool and quiet reading in the shade of a rustling palm. Exploring isn’t about rushing, it’s about the pauses where you have the chance to soak up the sense of a place. Relaxing with the faint scent of spices in the air, watching parakeets hop between trees, tracing your fingers over inlaid stones and chasing sprinkler trails on immaculate lawns.

Our family itineraries will always prioritise energy levels over clock watching and we profoundly understand the need for moments of calm, quiet and refueling.

Folk Stories, Kite Flying and Creative Afternoons

Puppet shows are a heritage art form in Jaipur and puppeteers have been entertaining families here for generations. After lunch, you’ll be treated to a puppet show before meeting the artists that carve and dress the string puppets. The shows are rich in folkloric symbolism, songs and stories, and the puppeteers will give you and your children a unique insight into the oral storytelling that remains a centrepoint of Rajasthani culture. Your children will then have the chance to craft puppets and tell their own stories with a mini display.

If energy levels are flagging, we’d suggest a visit from an experienced henna tattoo artist, who’ll paint a bespoke design on the hands or feet of any of your family members who’d like one. It’s a wonderfully soothing experience, sitting quietly as the ink sweeps over your skin, allowing you to experience this ancient artform that remains an important ritual, used to mark and celebrate auspicious occasions. Your tattoo will be a beautiful reminder of your trip and will last for up to two weeks, perfect for little ones to show off at home.

As the sun begins to dip at the end of the day, your guide will take you to the home of a local family where you’ll join them on their flat rooftop to take part in the fabulous kite flying displays that soar in the skies above Jaipur in the dry months. You’ll learn how to make a brightly coloured kite using bamboo and thin paper before launching it skywards and watching it swoop and swirl on the thermals above the city. While the children play, you can enjoy the sunset views over snacks and a cup of traditional tea, shared with the host family and your guide.

A Dinner Time Magic Show

It’s the ‘witching hour’, the children are tired and you’re craving an indulgently romantic dinner in the heart of Jaipur. We know how best to help. We’ll arrange for the children to be entertained throughout the meal with a magic show, not over stimulating, just gently keeping children enthralled and focused with storytelling, laughter and the sharing of simple tricks while you enjoy Rajasthani hospitality at its most luxurious, experiencing the multitude of flavours within Jaipur’s exquisite cuisine.

Why Jaipur Works Well for Children

Exploring India with children doesn’t need to feel daunting, you just need to know how, when and where to include your little people in your adventures. Jaipur is a prime example of a small city with a wonderfully welcoming attitude to children. Its rich artistic and craft heritages invite participation from visitors of all ages and it’s the ideal location to allow children the time and space to connect with the country on an experiential level.

Be it making kites or puppets, following the rhythmic hand movements of a flower garland weaver, waving at passersby from the comfort of a Jaipur tuk-tuk or learning ancient skills of block printing, clay pottery or cloth painting, there’s enough to keep everyone occupied here while quietly incorporating deeply cultural experiences. You’ll still have time and space to see all the major sights but you’ll see them through the eyes of a child, with exposure to the real magic, history and culture that sets this city apart.
