The Maldives: How to Choose the Right Luxury Resort
ShareThe Maldives: How to Choose Your Resort
Choosing the Best Luxury Resort in the Maldives
While people often talk about visiting The Maldives as if it’s one single destination, we prefer to view it as a collection of very different islands, each one offering a unique experience. Keeping this in mind is vital when it comes to planning your trip, where the size of the island, the atmosphere of the resort and the range of activities on offer will all have a profound effect on how your days are spent here.
There are some Maldives luxury resorts that are built around a sense of blissful retreat, where silence, stillness and serenity pervade. At others, the family facilities are the major draw, with childcare, water sports and multiple family dining options ensuring that guests travelling with children feel at ease. Then there’s the resorts that can be all things to all people, offering bespoke experiences tailored to the island holiday that you have in mind from spa treatments to swimming pools, sunset boat trips to scuba tours.
At Red Dot we understand the nuances of each Maldivian resort and can help you choose the best option for your holiday while also considering the practical logistics such as how long it takes to reach an island from the international airport in Male, whether your onwards trip is by sea plane or boat and, of course, your budget. We’ll take time to understand the dynamic of your group, whether you have small children or elderly parents with you and whether you imagine a Robinson Crusoe experience or want access to plenty of adventures.
In this guide we’ll walk you through some of the considerations to have in mind when you’re choosing your luxury Maldives resort and offer some suggestions from the hotels we love.
Island Atmosphere: Private Island Hideaway or Lively Luxury Resort?
While every resort in The Maldives sits on its own private island, the atmosphere on each of these can vary hugely depending on the size, layout and type of resort. So, your first consideration is whether you’re looking for quiet privacy and calm retreat or would also like broader options of activities and adventures.
Smaller Islands: Intimate, Calm and Private
The smaller private island resorts are blissful sanctuaries of calm. Sitting on tiny atolls in absolute peace and seclusion they offer a limited number of villas and you’ll find minimal shared spaces. Holidays here are built around you: your privacy, your space and your time. The all-pervading serenity is the attraction, so you won’t find exhaustive lists of trips or activities on offer.
Baros Maldives is a prime example. Despite its proximity to Malé, the island feels composed and quietly confident, with villas positioned to preserve privacy and a well-established house reef that allows snorkelling directly from shore. The food offering here is refined yet relaxed, reinforcing an atmosphere that feels deliberately understated, we find it’s particularly well-suited to couples seeking a private retreat and honeymooners.
Further south, COMO Maalifushi extends this sense of seclusion through its location in the remote Thaa Atoll. Here, the rhythm is slower and the environment more elemental. Villas are generously spaced, wellness is central to the island’s identity and experiences such as guided snorkelling, surfing or private dining are shaped around individual preference rather than a fixed programme.
Although larger in scale, Sun Siyam Olhuveli also balances space with a sense of calm. It is spread across three naturally connected small islands, which means it offers the chance to change pace throughout your day as you move between the livelier, activity-based areas and the quieter, more private stretches, all with the same understated luxury.
Larger Islands: Choice, Space and Variety
Larger Maldivian resorts offer a different interpretation of this island luxury, where you’ll find a vast range of activities, spa treatments and facilities on offer. These islands appeal to travellers who value space and choice: multiple restaurants, varied villa categories and a broader spread of activities while still prioritising sophistication and comfort.
Constance Halaveli, located in the North Ari Atoll, balances scale with elegance. Its distinctive overwater villas arc across a wide lagoon, while the island itself supports an easy, active pace with diving, watersports and refined dining. Nearby, Constance Moofushi offers a more informal style of luxury, pairing relaxed design with excellent access to dive sites and seasonal manta ray encounters. Both suit guests who enjoy variety without compromising on quality. Closer to Malé, Kurumba combines immediacy of access with breadth of experience. Multiple dining venues, cultural activities and a sociable atmosphere make it a strong choice for travellers seeking a lively yet well-established luxury resort. Velassaru, by contrast, offers a more contemporary and design-led interpretation of a larger island, blending understated style with open views across the lagoon.
Overwater Villas or a Beach Villas: Which is Best for You?
The decision between an overwater villa and a beach villa is one of the most searched-for aspects of choosing a Maldives resort and your choice can make a discernable difference to your experience.
Overwater villas provide a heightened sense of separation, with uninterrupted ocean views and direct access to the lagoon below. At resorts such as Constance Halaveli and Velassaru, these villas are designed with generous proportions and expansive decks that encourage time spent both in and above the water. Orientation and spacing vary by island, making layout an important consideration for those prioritising privacy.
Many first-time visitors to the Maldives think that an overwater villa is the ultimate choice but we feel that beach villas offer something rather special. You’ll find them cocooned in privacy, often within small tropical gardens, with doors or gates opening straight out onto the sand. This is a real plus point if you’re travelling with children and offers a more connected feel to the barefoot island life. At Baros, COMO Maalifushi and Royal Island, the beachfront accommodation is designed to offer the ultimate private retreat, with palm-shaded outdoor terraces, discreet pools and easy access to both the beach and the water.
Best Maldives Resorts for Couples, Families or Mixed Groups?
While the Maldives has a somewhat iconic appeal as a honeymoon destination or luxury couples’ retreat, there are just as many island resorts here that have been designed with children or multi-generational groups in mind.
For couples seeking a restorative slow pace and some indulgent time together, the smaller, more intimate islands naturally work best. Resorts such as Baros Maldives and Velassaru have been specifically designed to focus on refined dining, wellness and a calm atmosphere, making them ideal for stays as a couple.
Other properties offer broader appeal. Constance Halaveli, Constance Moofushi and Heritance Aarah provide family villas, gentle activity programmes and marine experiences that suit a wide range of ages. Kuramathi, in the North Ari Atoll, is particularly well suited to multi-generational travel, with a wide selection of villa categories, dining venues and activities spread across a large island footprint.
For families, the key is an island experience that is richly layered, able to offer activities for the children alongside some well-earned down-time for you as parents. Sun Siyam Olhuveli in the South Male Atoll is a wonderful example of an island resort that is well set up for families with its three connected islands enabling very distinct areas for each expectation at a very reasonable price.
Experiences Beyond the Beach
While you need to prioritise both the location and the type of accommodation on offer, you’ll also want to consider how you want to spend your time on the island and what level of exploration you want to include in your trip. Do you want to head out on a sunset boat trip to watch dolphins, surf some of the world’s cleanest breaks, picnic on your own private atoll or learn to scuba dive among the pristine reefs? Or would you rather indulge in some restorative spa treatments and take long swims in cooling pools?
Holistic wellness is woven into the essence of many of the island resorts, with open air yoga pavilions, overwater treatments rooms and tailored spa programmes a key focus at many properties. At COMO Maalifushi, wellness is woven into daily life with open-air spa settings and holistic treatments that are enhanced by the resort’s overriding sense of peace. COMO Cocoa Island boasts one of the only hydrotherapy pools in the archipelago alongside the exceptional Shambala wellness retreat with treatments deeply rooted in restorative wellbeing, ranging from hot stone massages to algae therapy wraps, acupressure to yoga and meditation.
On the water, activities range from gentle exploration to more dynamic pursuits. Guests may snorkel nearby reefs, join guided dives, sail at sunset or head out early in search of manta rays or whale sharks, depending on atoll and season. Resorts such as Cinnamon Dhonveli also appeal to niche interests, with its world-leading surf breaks offered alongside contemporary beachfront and overwater accommodation.
Marine Life, Snorkelling and Diving: Choosing the Right Atoll?
For many visitors, a trip to the Maldives is the chance of a lifetime to explore the outstanding marine life but this can be a vastly different experience depending on where you choose to stay. Not every island sits alongside a vibrant reef, and the diving and snorkelling conditions can also vary widely.
The best atolls for diving and snorkelling in the Maldives are the North and South Ari Atolls, where you’ll have the bonus of being able to spot manta rays and whale sharks if you’re visiting in the right season (usually May – November). Constance Moofushi, is prized for its proximity to some of the best dive sites, making it a favourite choice for guests keen to include lots of underwater time in their holiday.
If snorkelling is your priority, you’ll need to ensure that your island benefits from a healthy house reef, the coral garden that sits closest to the resort and enables easy opportunities to spot the kaleidoscope of tropical fish and turtles. A vibrant house reef can offer the perfect opportunity to introduce children to the underwater world, snorkelling safely straight from the sand outside your villa.
Some resorts, such as Baros Maldives, allow guests to snorkel directly from the island, benefitting from their healthy and vibrant house reef system, while others rely more on guided boat excursions out to reefs that surround neighbouring islands.
What Role Does Dining Play in a Luxury Maldives Stay?
Often it is the dining options that define a stay. The memory of a private meal shared under the stars with your toes in the sand, watching your children squeal in delight as turtles cruise past the window of the underwater restaurant or having the easy option of a gluten free, vegan curry while others tuck into fresh Maldivian seafood.
On the smaller islands you’ll find fewer restaurants, but the quality is usually consistently high, and the bespoke private dining options a standout highlight. In the larger resorts, you can expect to find a broad range of restaurants, where specific dietary requirements, personal taste and fussy children can all be easily accommodated. Kurumba and Heritance Aarah exemplify this approach, with both informal open-air dining pavilions set off the beach and more refined dining rooms on offer.
Luxury All-Inclusive Maldives Resorts: Is It Right for You?
Given that you’re spending all your time in one resort, it often makes sense financially to opt for the all-inclusive option, giving you ultimate control over the cost of your trip. At the luxury end of the market in the Maldives, these packages are cleverly designed to ease your experience rather than limit your options. You’ll find a selection of the best food, drinks and activities are often included.
Resorts such as Lily Beach and Heritance Aarah are prime examples of how this thoughtfully structured all-inclusive offering can add real value, ensuring that guests can switch off and enjoy the moment rather than focusing on logistics and costs throughout their trip.
For many, a more bespoke approach works well however, allowing you the freedom to dip in and out of experiences, spa treatments and dining options as you soak into your holiday, so cost plans are an important factor in deciding which approach works best for your group.
Choosing the Best Maldives Resort for You
There is not one single ‘best’ resort in the Maldives. However, there may well be one that perfectly reflects how you want to travel on this particular trip. Whether that means finding a quiet private island where privacy and wellness are the key factors, or a larger offering where you can dive and surf to your heart’s content or watch your children feeding manta rays or taking their first snorkels among sea turtles.
At Red Dot, we are perfectly placed to help you make that decision, mixing our deep knowledge of these islands with an in-depth understanding of your expectations and budget.
Practical Information for Planning Your Maldives Holiday
When Is the Best Time to Visit the Maldives?
You can visit the Maldives year-round but conditions do vary by season so it’s good to have an understanding of your priorities. The dry season between November and April offers the clearest skies and calm seas, making it an ideal time for relaxing on the beach, snorkeling and diving. If your priority is seeing the manta rays and whale sharks, they visit the islands regularly between May to November, feeding in the plankton rich waters.
For fewer crowds and better value trips, visiting between May and October will give you significant discounts. You’ll no-doubt experience the occasional short sharp tropical shower but it rarely rains all day and visiting during these months gives you a wonderfully intimate experience.
How Long Is a Flight from the UK to the Maldives?
Flights from the UK to the Maldives typically take around ten hours, usually overnight. Most services arrive into Malé in the morning, allowing onward transfers to resorts the same day.
What Is the Time Difference Between the UK and the Maldives?
The Maldives is generally four to five hours ahead of the UK, depending on the time of year. Most guests find this time difference easy and manageable, particularly if you’re arriving off an overnight flight.
How Do You Get from the International Airport to Your Resort?
International flights arrive into Velana Airport in Malé. From here, guests transfer to their resort by speedboat, seaplane or domestic flight followed by a boat journey. The transfer type depends on which atoll you are staying on, so is an important deciding factor in your choice of resort, particularly for shorter stays.
How Many Days Should You Spend in the Maldives?
A trip of five to seven nights gives you a wonderful introduction to the Maldives. It’s long enough to settle into island life and take full advantage of any experiences on offer, without feeling restless. If you want a longer trip, we would suggest choosing a larger resort with more facilities and trips on offer.
Many guests also choose to combine the Maldives with another destination, allowing them to have a trip split between cultural sightseeing and indulgent relaxation. We feel that combining a visit to Sri Lanka with the Maldives works brilliantly, if you’re seeking this dual experience and longer trip. Our Simply Sri Lanka & The Maldives itinerary gives an idea of how this combination might look for you.
